Product Review

Junker to Jewel

by   wlmay ,   Jul 18, 2001

Pros:  Rugged Quality Known for this product, Excellent Tow vehicle.

Cons:  Paint job

The Bottom Line:  Even though it came from the junk yard, it has been a true and faithful vehicle. Hasn't broke down once since I brought it home.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
Handling And Control: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I noticed this 1990 Laredo sitting in a junk yard for over two years and decided to inquire about it. Later that week, I drove it home. That was over a year ago.
The previous owner was inept and sliced wires all over the vehicle to find an "electrical problem" that occurred when he backed into something and mashed the trailer wire connector (i.e. He didn't look there). A flat tip screwdriver to separate the short and solderless connectors to put all the wires back together and I haven't had a problem with the electrical system since. There's slightly under 177,000 miles on the odometer and only routine maintenance had been done since driving it out of the yard. What drew me to it was the excellent condition of the body in the junk yard. All the problems had been the previous owner (and his knife). At Church and in the family, they have nicknamed her, "Faith", as when the other vehicles in the family have broken down two or three times this last year, Faith keeps marching on. I'm repainting her this year with "normal" primer and automotive paint. Don't know what Chrysler used but it didn't stick.
I've owned Wagoneers, Wranglers, CJs and other Cherokees. I would recommend them to anyone.
Of course, since all fluids, filters, lines and hoses were changed upon getting it home, it's run clean. The only repair/replacement I've done so far (other than above) is I've replaced the lift cylinders for the lift gate and minor body work in prep for painting.
