Author's Review
I bought my Jeep Cherokee Larado 5 years ago from a Toyota dealership. I had purchesed there before and trusted them. WRONG!!! Three days after I drove the Jeep off the lot, the transmission seized. Turns out there was a major leak that they somehow "missed". I had to have the Jeep towed to a transmission shop where it stayed for 3 weeks. Jeep does not have transmissions for this year and model so although I live in Ohio, my transmission came from a "junker" in Seattle. My clutch was also bad and had to be replaced. There was a sunroof that was sealed shut and the seal dried out. We opened it up and enjoyed it for 2 years before the leaks started. Since then, the Jeep is unusable when it rains. Because of the leak, I cannot keep ANYTHING in the Jeep, which isn't realistic with two small children. The rear-wheel axle broke a year ago and the entire thing, attached to the tire, came off while I was driving 55 m.p.h. Luckily, I was near home and when I turned into the driveway, it came completely off and the axle smacked into the left rear door, shattering the window where my 1 year old was sitting. The ignition control module has been replaced twice. When it goes out, you cannot start your car at all. Right now, it stalls if you're going slow, like in a parking lot, especially when you turn into a space, and it has stalled over 12 times while driving 35 m.p.h. on a straight road. The fog lights have never worked nor has the rear wiper. The radio broke within a year, and the paint is nearly non-existant on the hood of the Jeep. Right now, it looks like the poor thing has a bad case of dandruff, and you can see the paint flake off while driving. It is good in the snow and ice and since it is "4 on the fly", it makes it convenient to use 4 wheel drive. Unfortunately, the Jeep is in the barn right now and I will be looking for a new SUV this weekend. I will miss sitting up so high, the fully loaded options that I have (the 3 way adjustable seats are excellent for a shorty like me) and I have an emotional tie to this beast, but it just isn't reliable anymore and with kids, that's a must. If you're good at working on cars and have the time and money, I'd say go ahead and buy this vehicle. Just realize that because it was an "off" year, the parts are sometimes hard to find and it takes a while to get them ordered and delivered. I will miss it a lot. I thought the steering and handling were wonderful, and the cargo space was excellent. The back seats were extremely easy for me to fold up or remove completely, yet sturdy and stable while in place. I have been driving on the same tires for 4 years and they could go another 2. The Jeep comes with a full size spare which is rare, and wonderful, especially on an SUV that is 13 years old. I won't buy another Jeep because Consumer Reports rates them as poor for reliability and I can see why, and our dealer is rude and abraisive. I cannot stand him so I can't imagine dealing with him with another car. I suggest talking with the parts manager and service manager before buying this make and model because you will be dealing with them A LOT.
