Author's Review
My parents first purchased this 1988 Jeep Cherokee Sport 2 Door Inline Six 4x4 in 1994 with 91,000 miles on it. They drove it until 2000, where it was parked away in a garage, the battery was removed, and went untouched until 2005.
At the time, I was just getting ready to get my drivers license and we thought it would be a good idea to save some money and use the Cherokee since it has been neglected by my parents for five years. My dad and I opened the garage, popped the hood, put in a new battery, and tried to turn it over. It fired up the first time. Even with five year old gas! TRY THAT WITH A FORD EXPLODER!!!! We replaced the radiator, all hoses for good measure, and the radiator was sort of plugged to begin with.
After about 30 miles of driving, the Cherokee started to sputter and died on the side of the road. After diagnosing and replacing over eight-hundred dollars worth of engine sensors, that we found out were not the problem, but rather a rubber hose connecting the fuel pump to the chassis lines, and the fuel was leaking out the hose and back into the tank, not producing enough pressure and preventing the engine from running. The hose probably rotted from being submerged in gas for 5 years. We replaced the pump for good measure.
Now, two years later, I put around 20,000 miles on it, now the Jeep has 171,600 miles on it, and it still runs like a champ. I changed out my gauge cluster, to the upgraded cluster with the smaller gauges instead of idiot lights. It was plug and play. It was a huge help and now I can read all of my vital engine functions, instead of having to rely on a idiot light.
The seats for being "base" seats are in excellent shape, and hug the sides of you, and I find it very comfortable. And being 6'4" I am extremely comfortable and the large 2 Doors are easy to get in and out of. Don't even try to get anybody larger than an infant into the backseat, especially in the 2 door, as it is nearly impossible.
Overall, I love this Cherokee. It is 19 years old, and has its noises, and it aint no Cadillac, but I still love it to death.
