Author's Review
Back in the later part of 1987, my parents bought a red 1988 Jeep Cherokee Chief with all options and the 4.0 I-6. We have had no complaints about this vehicle at all. For the first two years of its life, we brought it on two 8,000 cross-country trips - one from new jersey to california, up to montana and the second to montana and back through the southern half of the united states. After that until 1995, the Jeep went twice per year to Montana and back to New Jersey. In a few days, this Jeep will be hitting 180,000 miles. The only problems that I can recall on this vehicle was the water pump (2 years ago), all 6 fuel injectors were spraying gas on the engine, the a/c had to be switched over to the r134a system, and the shocks were replaced twice. These latter repairs were only done in March of 2000. Other than those repairs, only the usual maintenence repairs were done on it. It still has its original engine, original transmission, original alternator, etc. The Jeep still has its original 190 HP and still runs amazingly well for all the miles it has on it. Sure the paint is starting to show signs of wear due to all of the winter driving it has been through and it's starting to get a little shaky which would be common for a vehicle with that many miles on it but we've grown so attached to it. If you want a great dependable vehicle with a good amount of power, go for a Jeep Cherokee. These vehicles are built extremely well and so long as you are constant with maintenence, you will not have a problem with it.
