Alanis Rocks
Date of Review: Feb 10, 2000
The first I heard of Alanis Morissette was when I heard 'Ironic' on the radio walking to work. Every word of that song is so, so true. I found myself humming the tune and marvelling at the lyrics. Eventually when I heard 'You Oughta Know' and thought it was written specifically for me, I decided it was time to go out and buy Jagged Little Pill.
What a revelation, Alanis has the ability to make you feel that a song was written for your own special circumstances. The lyrics aren't very 'man friendly' but boy do they kick ass for womankind.
I am especially a fan of 'I see right through you' . I really felt at the particular time I was listening to this, that this song was written for me. I could not believe the lyrics - I was going through a break up and I spent lots of nights listening to that at full blast over and over again - I felt better after it, sort of a cleansing of the soul.
I have bought her second released album , but I don't connect quite as much with the lyrics. Alanis had a break between albums and did a lot of soul searching. Her music has toned down and she doesn't quite seem to be as angry at the world as she was. I still love her music and listen to the second album , but it doesn't quite have the punch in the guts of Jagged Little Pill.
Angry? vent your anger - put on Jagged Little Pill and deafen the world!
