Author's Review

Jacob Have I Loved is written with tenderness and deep insight. Paterson taps into the deepest of emotions that hide in the cracks and crevices of a teenage girl's heart, but are seldom brought out of hiding for public consumption.

This is not a book for those who are looking for action and on-the-surface adventure. Rather, it's a coming-of-age novel that explores the emotions of a twin teenage girl who has to deal with the fact that she is not her sister. This is a lesson for all about comparisons. It is a realization that there are many types of people and learning to see yourself as every bit as valuable as any stereotypical norm.

The setting is on a sleepy little island away from the noise and rapid pace of a city, which allows the reader to hear the noise that occurs in a young girl's heart. Written in the first-person voice, it reads almost like a diary.

The characterization is excellent, including that of a crabby, judgmental grandmother who is not a major character but adds a lot of flavor to the story.

Lastly, this is a story about the choices we make and the power we have over own destiny.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for in-depth writing that will cause you to reflect.
