Strong smoky, woody character, good balance of sweetness.

Maybe a little to strong for bourbon new-comers.
The Bottom Line:
One of the most classic examples of an American Bourbon whiskey, worthy of it's great reputation.

Author's Review
What else is there to say really about Jack Daniels old No. 7 Black Label? Perhaps the best known of American Bourbon Whiskey's, it has a character and a presence that set it apart from the rest. Songs have been written about it, and I would say often because of it, and the Jack Daniels name had made the Southern United States synonymous with Bourbon. It is a full flavored Whiskey, and even mixed, you can almost always tell Jack Daniels apart from the rest. That Charcoal "Mellowing" really comes through. I have tasted many Whiskey's over the years that I would consider smoother, how ever, it is the stronger, more distinct characteristics of Jack Daniels that i prefer. Many of the restaurants and bars I have worked at over the years have sold Jack Daniels as a call or top shelf brand, and I have think it holds its own against some of the higher end competitors, such as Bookers, Bakers, Basil Hayden and Maker's Mark. If you are accustomed to lesser Bourbon Whiskey's then Jack Daniels may take a little getting used to on the rocks or in shot form, but if you are a fan of the smoky, woody flavor of whiskeys, and the subtle sweetness of American Bourbon, then Jack Daniels is an excellent choice.
