Author's Review
Game Play
The graphics are great, the game play is great, and its not repetitive. After 10 hours of play, the character we created is only %16 finished.
Game play is fast, and has a little bit of a story line to it, narration and panoramic views before races start can be skipped with the press of a button. The streets in the game have good layouts, and the game play remains fluid because maps have lots of places you can go that arent on the street.
Sound Track
The sound track on this game is one of the best Ive seen yet. Some tracks include songs by:
Fabulous, T.I, Petey Pablo, Lil' Wayne, Sean Paul, Slim Thug, & Twista. They arent the unknown tracks either, these songs are almost all radio play tracks.
It makes for great music and fits the game great.
The Cars
After completing races, or beating others in competitions, you can buy or win new cars. Depending on the cars you own (You can own more than one) you can then buy extras, superchargers, nitrous, neon, vinyl artwork, paint, a huge selection of rims, including spinners and choppers.
The add-ons also include bumpers, ground effects and hood kits. You can add hydraulics to the car, custom exhaust, and even personalize the license plates.
Some Cars within the game include, the Chrysler 300, Hummer, 57 Chevy, Dodge Charger, SRT Neon, and even Motorcycles.
The drivability and speed is different on each of these cars, but you can own more than one at a time. Some cars are required in order to race within clubs.
Race Types
The races within the game are grouped into categories, you have sanctioned races, where there are no traffic and the streets are barricaded.
You have street races, where you race against others either to a destination or by laps.
And you have competitions, where you must win a certain number of races and rank in the top 3 average for all the races ran within the competition.
Each race completed then has money awards based on your rank, as well as car prizes for the larger competitions.
Race Paths
Race paths in the game are marked by colored flares, the smoke from these flares can be seen blocks away, and there is a minimap in the bottom corner of the screen to help guide you in the race path. You must follow the path to the destination on street races or you will end up going backwards to a check point.
While you must hit all these checkpoints you can take shortcuts over roofs, under parking garages, down sidewalks and grass, over ramps ect.
As your character progresses, you can unlock additional cities. Opening new tasks, new game play, new maps. Which is why I say this game is anything but repetitive.
In Game Skills
As you Progress in game, the story continues a little bit, and your character learns new skills, such as drifting, speed boosts by trailing in someone draft, and "roar" where muscle cars can rev engines to make other cars move out of the way.
Player Skills
Game play is good, the controls are easy to learn, Right Trigger for Gas, Left Trigger to Drift. A to brake, X for Nitro, Click Joystick for Roar or other special modes. The Directional control pad switches soundtrack.
I rented this game on a whim, only because the commercial for it looked interesting, and it turned into an addiction
