Author's Review
I bought this stereo after researching a little on the internet. I had owned a couple of JVC's before and was not impressed. I found that they were lacking in both features and sound quality as well as power. I noticed though that over the last couple of years JVC has been using better quality components in their stereos. They are using Burr Brown 24 bit Dacs, new capacitors specifically tuned to certain types of music, parametrc equalizers, upgraded tuners for radio, high voltage preouts 5v,and features such as the ability to turn off the internal amplifier, and the use of mosfet power chips, And improved cosmetics. I personally prefer the Arsenal series as that line is geared toward people like myself who want top notch features. I bought this stereo online for about 130.00 dollars. I have been very pleased with its performance. All of the aforementioned improved features are all found in the KD-AR780 plus several others like a front panel auxillary input(mini pin), a remote control, three sets of 5 volt preouts, high pass crossover for front and rear speakers, low pass crossover for subwoofer, detachable faceplate with carrying case. If you want the ability to go the add on route you will not be dissapointed. You can add a Bluetooth adapter, both Sirius and Xm satellite Radio,a cd changer or an Ipod adapter. You can plug anything that is mini pin capable to the auxillary input on the faceplate, such as a portable cassette player or your laptop or a portable dvd player. Now for the performance. The internal amp is much improved over previous generation models. It is clean and powerful. And when matched appropriately with speakers both aftermarket and stock it will push them nicely(within reason). The cd section is very detailed and articulate due to the Burr Brown 24 bit dac.And combined with the three band parametric equalizer you can get the sound you want to match all types of music. The fm and am tuners are quite capable and I was very surprised to find that I could pick up am stations that my Alpine cannot. The crossovers work very well at cutting frequencies your speakers can't play. The only knock I will give this stereo is the faceplate could be a little more secure. This particular model has a variable color display that is very readable. You can select a plethora of different colors, have it scroll through all of them or even create your own and store them. You can also switch between a positive or negative display(black or lighted background). I am very experienced with car stereos as I have owned enough to be considered obsessive about them.I actually prefer this one over my alpine cda 9833.Now everyone has differing opinions on who makes the best stereo, but please understand that is not what I am trying to do here. What I am trying to do is(albeit long winded)is help someone who is less experienced make a somewhat more informed decision before purchasing this stereo. Bottom line is the JVC KD-AR780 is a very well featured stereo with alot of room to grow. And for the price it can be had at it is competitive with any model in its price range. A big thumbs up to JVC for stepping up the quality.
