Product Review

Great for transporting most files

by   claierj ,   Jun 20, 2003

Pros:  Great portability and ample space for most projects

Cons:  Zip disks are expensive

The Bottom Line:  I recommend that anyone try this drive, especially if you've only used cd burners.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

The 250 Zip drive is a great buy and a huge time saver. Rather than saving files to the desktop and then waiting for a cd to burn, you can automatically save to the disk without the wait.

One of the main differences between the zip disk and the cd is that the disk is editable. It's just like saving to your hard drive - you can add and delete any files anytime you like instead of having many volumes on a cd and having to find one particular file you need when all the others are unnecessary.

I would definitely recommend this zip drive if you are a student in graphic design or some other field that involves large files needing to be transported constantly to be worked on.

The only real problems that I had with the zip drive was that, at times, I could not fit all the files I needed on one disk so I would end up having to sort through four or five disks to find one file. This mainly happened with large Photoshop files that had more than 20 layers that were not flattened.

I did have a problem with my drive not being able to read disks after I had used it for about 6 months or so. I sent it back to Iomega and they were very quick about shipping me a new drive. They also sent me some new disks and, even thought they were the wrong disks, it was a nice gesture.

One of the major benefits of these disks is that they can be used at almost any Kinko's. In my own experience, Kinko's computers do not have cd burners on them, and the easiest way to store files is to use a zip drive.

The disks are expensive, around $8 to $10 a piece and they can usually only be found in physical stores in three or five packs. However, I had great success with finding cheaper prices at online auctions.

Using a zip drive with zip disks still doesn't really beat the price of cd's, which are usually close to free after store and mail in rebates.
