Product Review

The worst in the series.

by   moviebuff88 ,   Feb 19, 2006

Pros:  Let me think.

Cons:  Graphics, gameplay, controls, story, there is a lot.

The Bottom Line:  Don't buy San Andreas on the Xbox.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

When I first got this game, I thought it was going to be the best in the GTA series. But I soon found out it wasn’t after playing the game for a few weeks. I really think it’s the worst in the series. Now if you are familiar with the old GTA games that were on Playstation I am not counting those. Any way I will explain to you why I think this is the worst in the series.

Graphics

The graphics are bad, there even worst than PS2’s graphics. They look pretty bad, because their arms are all blocky and look bad. The characters really don’t look good at all. However the cars do, they are shinny and really look good. The Xbox is way better than the PS2, and it produces much better graphics but definitely not on the Xbox. There are tons of glitches too, and the PS2 version had very few, but you will see them all throughout this Xbox game. If you are looking for good Xbox graphics then do not buy this game. If you don’t care then this game might be worth the purchase, but the graphics are not the only problem. The cut scenes look even worse then the game does. I didn’t enjoy watching the cut scenes.

Controls

This is another big problem with the Xbox game. The Controls are terrible! If you are looking to do a drive by shooting then you have to press white, (or black) B, and R all at the same time. Its really hard to do, and it is not something you can get used to easily. These horrible controls make the game really hard to play because you will have to do a lot of drive by shootings. The on foot controls are mediocre, they are kind of slapped together but they are not hard to get used to. Also when you steal are car you have to press Y twice sometimes, that gives the person plenty of time to steal their car back. I hate the controls in this game, and it really made it difficult and not fun to play. So if your willing to play a game with bad controls then this might also be worth the purchase otherwise I would avoid this one.

The whole reason I think this is the worst is because of the location, and the story. At first it will be really fun but it got old quick for me. You are in a made up state called San Andreas witch I though was pretty stupid, but it is based on the State of California. There is also Las Vegas witch I think is the best location in the game. They call it “Las Ventures.” I do not like the guy you are too much either. You play as a guy named Carl who just had his mother killed, and needs to get back to his hood as soon as possible, before any more of his relatives are killed. I just don’t like the location because there it is just too big, I loved GTA Vice City because it had such a great location. You were in Florida, and it was so much fun to mess with the tourists. But in San Andreas every body drives bad, and it just is not as fun to mess with people. Vice City was the perfect size, and San Andreas is just way too big. Like in some missions you will have to drive for at least 30 minutes.

Driving

The driving in this game sucks, the screen gets all blurry when you get going fast witch makes it hard to concentrate on the road, also it’s hard to bail out. In GTA VC you only press one button real quick and your out. In this you will have to hold two buttons to bail out, witch sucks too do when your cars on fire because it will blow up with you still in it. Its also harder to turn and just so much less enjoyable to do. You will have driving stats but it takes long to get them up, and is really a pain in the first half of the game. The only good part about driving is you get to steal the car. So if you are looking for a good driving game, don’t purchase this game. Unless you can give it six months, because that’s how long it took me to get my driving stats all the way up. And the driving still was not as good as the previous Grand theft auto. (Vice City) If you want a game were you can steal cars, and enjoy driving them then purchase Grand theft auto Vice city.

Gameplay

This GTA is just too complicated for my taste. You will have to do so much stuff, and all I want to do is unfold the story and do missions. But you won’t be able to just do that in this one. You have to work out, and press buttons really fast. There are some button press missions that I hate. I really hate in games when you have to press buttons really fast. Its something that is hard, and not fun to do at all. I really am not good at the kind of thing, so it took me forever to finally beat the stupid mission. There will be some missions that can hold you for like a week. You will just keep trying, and all you want to do is move on, but you can’t until you finish this stupid mission. I hated the racing missions, and they were the ones that held me for a week at times. This game will have you wasting so much time over one mission. Its like your in school and you just can’t figure out a problem. One fun thing to do is free roam, but it will also get old quick.

Free Roaming

If you’re a parent and your wondering why your kids love these games so much is because of the freedom. You can do whatever you want to do like stealing cars, shooting pedestrians, killing cops, and all kinds of stuff. Kids love to do these kinds of things in video games and you can do it all in this game. That’s why these games are so popular. All kids love this game, and most are not aloud to own it. So my younger brother, and his friends ask me too by it for them. It was almost like a kid waiting at a gas station asking you to buy him cigarettes. Any boy who plays video games will love this game because of the free roaming. A lot of times kids won’t like games because of what you have to do. But you can do whatever you want to do in this. However I got bored of the free roaming pretty quick but my little brother could sit there free roaming for hours, I know this because he has. So if you like free roaming then you will like this game because the free roaming is probably the best part of the game. Sometimes I can spend time free roaming, but I like doing missions better.

To Parents

If your child is under 14 I don't think you will like them playing this game. There is tons of harsh language, sex, drug use, and violence. This is not a game for children to play, or even watch someone play.

I have noticed how many people love this game, but its just to long and boring. It will take about a year to beat, and after six months you will probably find yourself selling it. I no longer have any use for this game, and I think I am going to sell it. If you want to get this cheap then you can get it at your local video game store for pretty cheap. Just make sure you get it on PS2 if you own one. If your new to the GTA series then I would recommend GTA Vice City its much more fun, and has a better story.
