Product Review

good balance

by   danneauxs ,   Jul 29, 2006

Pros:  slim, light, good picture quality, nice sound (headphones), plays avi/divx(subtitles)/xvid files

Cons:  Noisy drive unit, long avi startup, tinny internal speakers, short battery life

The Bottom Line:  If the price is right for you buy it, you'll enjoy the versitility this particular portable unit offers.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought this from Wal-mart last year. I wanted something to take with me as I traveled for work. My main and initial interest in this player was it's avility to play avi/Divx files. Since I already had a Philips 642 at home that played these files I wanted a protable unit that would do the same. Putting 4 movies on one disc or an entire season of Sopranos on one dvd works out much better when traveling than carrying a seperate disc for each movie.
I was impressed with what came with the unit, carry bag, 2 headphones, a/v cables, charger, battery, car adapter etc. The picture quality is quite nice, clear and bright ( if you use the s-video cable, regular rca cables tend towards a bit darker picuter when connecting to a TV) sharp and overall quite good. I'm sure there are better screens out there with more bells and whistles, but since I don't own those others I can't comment on them. The 10.2" screen size is quite nicer than many of the other units with smaller screens in the 1250b's price range. The different output jacks offer a wide range of hoodup options. The dual headphone plugs are nice for 2 viewers in the back of a car. The built in speakers are tinny and nothing to write home about, but not bad. We love to set the player on a barstool on the porch in front of our porchswing at night and watch movies outside. Now that's living. The slim remote is OK but nothing to get worked up about. LOL but what remote is?
Unit plays most burned discs I've tried, but the drive unit is quite noisy! AVI/Divx/Xvid files play very well and with Divx encoding you can even have subtitles on this player!! Will NOT play Nero encoded mp4 files though. That's sad since Nero files encode so quickly and produce excellent results especially when you consider the turnaround time.

This is a nice player for the money. You could do worse and you might even do better but I don't think you can go wrong if you get it for a reasonable price.
