Did not work for me

I did my research and took the IQAir recommendation test on their website. It all said the IQAir Multigas was the one for me. So I bought it for just over $1000. I read in the manual that it would need to be run in a non-critical room with the windows open for a period of time which we did. I then tested it overnight in my bedroom. I seemed to wake up with an uncharacteristic stuffy nose. The next day I ran it in my family room sporadically during the day. Before going to bed I put it in the bedroom and closed the door to run it on high a few hours before going to bed. When I went into the room there was a dusty/musty smell. I turned it down to the lowest level and went to bed anyways, confident I had bought the best product and it was doing its job but I didn't really understand why it would cause the air in the room to smell. The next morning I woke up coughing and hacking. I went outside to clear my lungs. After walking around awhile my lungs were clear and I was breathing better again. I went back into the bedroom and immediately my throat got scratchy and my sinuses swelled. I decided to return the unit. As near as I could tell they put their carbon filters after the particle filter. In addition they send you carbon filters that are very dusty and require you to put these tight cotton like filter covers on them. I suspect that the reason they want you to run it in a non-critical room with all the windows open is that they expect this to blow the carbon particles out of the unit. Even though we ran it for the recommended time I likely was reacting to the carbon particles still being put out in the room. I don't really know that this is for sure what was happening but that is my guess from having put the unit together and seeing how it was built. Thankfully they took it back with no problems.

In terms of other comments on the unit the lowest speed is quite a bit louder by dB level with other units. IQAir is not one of the quieter ones despite some reviews that claim it is.

The wheels are essentially non-functional for carpet as they are very flimsy plastic and concern for them will cause you to lift the unit to move it on carpet. We also have tile floors and you could feel them bend when you push it over the tile.

If you go through the "Help me choose option" on IQAir's web site and it directs you to the multigas it has this to say about it and I have copied and pasted it directly:
"While gas and chemical filtration is the specialty of the GC MultiGas, the system also contains IQAir’s patented medical-grade HEPA filter which is tested and certified to filter particulates down to 0.003 microns in size with a guaranteed minimum efficiency of over 95% and filters particles 0.3 microns or larger with a guaranteed minimum efficiency of over 99%."

This unit does NOT contain a HEPA filter it has a general particle filter which is not the same thing. If you go right to the multigas page on their web site it says:
"Micro- and nano-particle filtration"

This is not the same as a HEPA filter and on this page as well as in the user manual they do not claim to include a HEPA filter.

I was disappointed because I had expected a high quality HEPA filter as indicated on the recommendation page.

All in all I think that any air filter unit that is designed to blow harmful particles into your room and needs to be run with the windows open while it clears itself out is not a good choice. Better to find one that is properly built and sealed so that you don't risk contaminents being blown into your room.

Consumer reports rated the sister product to this poorly and they were right.
