Cross Country Family Trip in Elantra GT

Date of Review: Nov 19, 2003

The Bottom Line:  Great looks, great handling, lots of features, best warranty
I was apprehensive about traveling cross country from Phoenix to Corpus Christi in a 2003 Elantra GT with my wife and two daughters. Two days there, two days back. I had a lot of time/miles to get to know my Elantra GT intimately.

Each day we did 9 hours on the road, doing about 70-90 mph and averaging about 32 mpg. Both nights we stayed in Van Horn, Texas and ate at Chuy's Cafe, home of the John Madden Hall of Fame. My family really enjoyed staying at a hotel with continental breakfast because my 7 and 9-year old daughters could make waffles.

I should say that I have been in automobile sales for 19 years and have been with Hyundai for the last 9 years. I remember a time when you almost had to force someone to buy a Hyundai. And now I own one! I bought it because I wanted to downsize. I liked the features, handling, and warranty. The 5-door version appealed to my champagne tastes, the price appealed to my beer budget.

Once we removed the deck lid in the back, the Elantra GT became very quiet. I want to be objective... I can't complain about the Elantra GT, it did everything very well.
It handled well. The seats are more comfortable than my Bonneville. The legroom was phenomenal!

After four days in my Elantra GT with my family, I have a new appreciation for Hyundai. Sure, I think they should have made it a higher performance car with a bigger engine...But, I guess they'd call that car a Saab.

Thanks to my Elantra GT and a portable DVD player, our cross country trip brought my family closer together.
