Author's Review
On New Year's Eve a friend from out of town stayed with me at my apartment overnight. She couldn't sleep, and said it was unbearably dry in my place. She told me no wonder why my sinuses are always bothering me and my skin is so dry. She suggested I get a humidifier, something I didn't even think of.
I bought a very inexpensive humidifier, and I did feel better right away. The downside with the new humidifier was that it needed a replacement filter every few weeks. I told my mother who lives down in Florida about how the humidifier helped me. She decided to buy one, which was the Hunter one I am reviewing. She loved it, her sinus headaches completely ceased. My mother ordered two of these humidifiers for myself, my sister and my brother because she and her husband were so pleased with it.
I gave away the humidifier I had. Before the new ones came I noticed the difference without a humidifier. I wondered how I went all this time living here without one. When they arrived, I was happy. The humidifier has a large blue clear container you fill with water. Then you turn it over and there is a gurgling sound as water goes into the reservoir.
There is a blue nightlight that lights up the blue tank. In a dark room that looks very nice and also will prevent you from tripping over it. There is a high nd low fan setting, as well as a digital humidistat.
You set the humidistat to the desired humidity level. It will automaticlly stop when that level is reached. The filter, by the way, never needs replacing. It is also treated with something that is antimicrobial.
I will now include details from www.indoorsandoutdoors.com, so you can get the specific product details:

The fan does make some noise. On low it's not very loud. On high it's pretty noisy! I tried to sleep with one running. I have one in my bedroom and one in my livingroom, which are all the rooms I have. I was able to sleep with it running, until it made the gurgling sound when the water goes into the reservoir. That sounds exactly like one of my cats vomiting. Several times I have heard the 'glug glug' and looked to see who is throwing up a hairball. So, I can't sleep with this device running. I am not a person who likes to sleep with noise, though I live on 6th avenue in Manhattan so I do have to. I also live down the street from a hospital, and I can take ambulances and sirens, but not this gurgling noise.
However, it WORKS! I set the humidistat, and it humidifies the apartment. One effect it has is that it does make the room a little colder. So if it's freezing in here I may turn it off for awhile.
It says you need to clean it about once a season, using water with a small amount of white vinegar. I have rinsed it out a few times, because the water in the bottom was looking orange/brown. Two years ago there was a drought, and our water supply was switched to a different source. For months the high sulfur content caused brown water. It was pretty unpleasant. I have since noticed the water leaves brown/orange residue in my pet's dishes. So I do need to clean this more than you would if you don't have this funky water!! However it didn't stain, and was removed without vinegar solution.
I really love the night light. I love how my sinus headaches have been eradicated entirely since using these.
My skin is also not dry, and my hair is markedly less static. My cats are all also less static as well! I no longer feel itchy like I used to.
A cool mist humidifier is going to have noise, since it uses a fan. You need to refill the water tank daily. I definitely can recommend this humidifier since my experience with it is positive. No leaking, no malfunctioning. My entire family is happy with these humidifiers. My friend who suggested a humidifier jokingly asked me to give my mother her address so she can be sent one too. I love it. You can purchase it online at several sites. You can go here: http://www.hunterfan.com/dealer.php
to find a nearby dealer. It is available with free shipping at drugstore.com for $89.99.
Update: My sister has the humidifer too and she told me to avoid the gurgling noise over night just make sure the water tank is full before you go to sleep. The gurgle sound is the water emptying into the reservoir.
