I purchased this Care Free Humidifier Plus Evaporative Humidifier by Hunter because I was tired of purchasing two to three filters every winter for our Kaz Humidifier. At around $4 a filter, every year it was getting more and more expensive to own it.
The Hunter Care Free Humidifier is low maintenance, which means there are no paper filters to replace. It comes with two PermaWick filters which are designed to last year after year. They are made of some type of coated metal-like material. The filters as well as the plastic parts have built-in antimicrobial properties. This means that they are able to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungi.
There are many other great things about this humidifier. It has a clear water tank, so I can see when the water is running low. Our other humidifier was made with the water tank on the bottom and housing unit on top. I could never tell how much water was left unless I took the unit off. This was a real hassle, sometimes I'd forget to check and the filters would be ruined from the fan running with no water.
Another nice feature is the fan power/speed control which allows you to choose how fast the fan runs. This controls how much humidity disperses into the room and also the noise level of the fan. Of course the speed also effects how many times the tank will need to be filled as well. I usually need to fill it once every 12 hours on the low setting.
There is also a night light that illuminates next to the water tank, which is great if you need it in your bedroom. Keeps you from tripping over it during those early morning bathroom trips!
Using it is a breeze. You just place the humidifier on a flat surface, remove the water tank, unscrew the tank cap, fill the tank with cool water, replace the cap, turn the tank upright and place it on the humidifier. Plug it in, turn it on and it's working like a charm!
It's pretty easy to clean. The filters and base are cleaned in a solution of 1 gallon of water with 8 ounces of undiluted white vinegar. You soak them for 20 minutes to remove mineral build-up, and then rinse well. Allow the filters to drip dry and just wipe the base with a towel. The water tank is cleaned with undiluted white vinegar, just shake it around inside and then rinse well. There is also a small sponge that acts as a filter inside the housing unit that gets rinsed as well.
How often you need to clean it depends on your water hardness and mineral build up. We have a water softener and two Omni Whole House Filters on our water line, since it has such high iron content. Last year I cleaned it twice, once a few months after running it, and then again before storing until this winter.
The only con about the humidifier is that it does make some noise. Of course it's most noticeable on the medium and high fan settings. It's not unbearably loud, it just makes that soft breezy fan sound you'd expect. It doesn't hum or sound like a jet or anything like that.
A couple of technical details are that the tank holds 1 gallon of water and it humidifies approximately 1,175 square feet.
I'm very pleased with the Hunter Care Free Humidifier Plus Humidifier, it has many great features and works terrific!
