How To Make An American Quilt (1995)

I'll be honest, the only reason I saw this movie was because I was forced to watch it for a class I am taking. If it wasn't for this class I probably wouldn't have rented it or even sat through it if it was on HBO. Our assignment was to watch the film and see if we could figure out each characters life theme. I must say, I am glad we were forced to watch it because it ended up being a pretty good movie.

The mood of the movie is definitly slow. Since it is definitly a "chick flick" I would recommend it as a date movie. But once you get by this (and if you're in the mood) the movie's plot is pretty interesting. It is basically about a group of older women who look back over their lives. A lot of what they remember has to do with relationships with men in their lives. Each women tells Wynona Rider about the positives and negatives of each relationship. I know it might sound a little slow but the writer and actors did a great job keeping the movie moving so it didn't get boring at all.

The actors did a great job bringing the characters to life. They played each part really well and brought plenty of emotion to each scene. Each character had depth which made the plot interesting to follow.

One negative I found in the movie is its portrayal of men. Being a male myself, I found it a little disappointing that every man in the movie cheated on their wife/girlfriend at least once in the relationship. I know some men do this, but to portray every relationship with this happening is not accurate and I don't think should have been written in the script. Maybe the writers did this to make a solid point, but I just had to state my opinion.
