Product Review

"I'm not giving up on a miracle drug."

by   hawaiianstud ,   Jan 24, 2006

Pros:  However I'm feeling, listening to U2 always does the magic for me.

Cons:  Some of their earlier Cd's, I would only buy for a couple songs.

The Bottom Line:  I highly recommend buying this CD. Everyone who appreciates true legends, should have a copy of this album in their homes. You'll listen to it over and over again.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

As I was watching one of U2's newest concerts on video, Bono started to give a little speech on one of their newest songs called "Miracle Drug." And this little speech made me admire this group even more then I always have. He started listing some of the greatest hits that they have done, like "Where the streets have no name, One, With or without you." He said "This is the stuff that we get high on. This is our miracle drug." I really believe that U2 has dedicated their heart and soul to their music. Their songs are real, and have much meaning to them. Their songs mean quite a bit to me too. I also admire what they stand for. True they may be very political, but most things they do are for a very good cause. Also, they make their concerts fun and exciting. My brother has been to one of their concerts, and he said "The whole place was just shaking, and there was never a dull moment. Everyone was excited and energetic the whole night." In the concert I watched on video of their new album, I have seen Bono involve every member of the band equally. He would put each one of them in the spotlight, and tell good things about them. He would also involve crowd members in alot of his songs. One that always amazes me is their song called "Mysterious Ways." Every time I have seen them perform that song, they bring up a girl member from the audience, and she dances during the whole song.
U2 isn't just my favorite group, but it's a family favorite too. I don't know too many families who share in one favorite group.
I really like this new album of theirs. It is very worth having. It brings back memories of their album "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby." Those 3 would have to be my favorite albums. My reason for referring this album, especially this group, is for one reason, they have been together for close to 30 years. I have heard of alot of different bands breaking up, which is very sad. This one has stuck through it all. They get along greatly, they all contribute amazingly to their music, and they always make things exciting. And this new album has proved them to be triumphantly successful.
I have many Cd's, but every time I go home, or go to a friends house, or drive in my car, thats one of the first groups I'll always listen to is U2. I usually cant go a day without listening to them. One song on this album that stands out to me is "Sometimes you can't make it on your own." It's a lengthy title, but the words have alot of meaning. It was a song dedicated to his father, and sung at his fathers funeral. He stated in a concert that his father was a tenor, and that he loved music. So Bono said that there was a particular part in this song where I sing really high. It's when he says "Can you hear me when I sing, your the reason I sing, your the reason why the opera is in me. Oh hey, just gotta let you know. A house doesn't make a home. Don't leave me here alone." And at this same time, The Edge plays the guitar so beautifully. I love this whole song, but that part of the song always gets me excited. It's a very nice song dedicated to his father, and I'm sure his father heard that song.
The first part of the song Miracle Drug is pretty entertaining. It puts the song title into great perspective. He says "I want to trip inside your head, spend the day there. Deliver things you haven't said, see what you might see. I want to hear you when you call, do you feel anything at all, I want to see your thoughts take shape and walk right out." When I first saw what the title of the song was, I didn't expect such greatness when listening to the song. I thought it would be about drugs, but it was about their music, and how their music served as the miracle drug. This song turned out to be one of my favorites on the CD. Their music I believe is what brought them strongly together, and kept them together. And The Edge again plays a great guitar solo toward the middle of the song. One of the greatest guitar solos I have ever heard. The Edge is very fun to watch, no matter what song he plays, he stomps his feet and swivels his guitar like there is no tomorrow. Every person in this band is exciting to watch. Adam Clayton makes playing the bass look so easy. Bono has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard, and Larry Mullen Jr. brings the music together greatly with his amazing drum abilities.
They have almost every type of song on this album. They have their full on rock and roll song called Vertigo. They sing about their music in Miracle Drug. In their 3rd song, sometimes you can't make it on your own, he sings about his father. Then there is love and peace which is just an exciting song, because you don't know what to expect, or what they will say. Adam Clayton does some nice bass playing in that one. That's a song I would crank up the bass on. Then City of blinding lights amazed me. The solos at the beginning of this song last for over a minute before any singing starts. It reminded me of where the streets have no name on their Joshua Tree album. Both songs have great starting solos. And where can I start with Larry Mullen Jr. He's one of the greatest drum players that I know. Every member in that band is always exciting to watch. U2 has become a very important part of my life. However I'm feeling, U2 always does the magic for me. If I'm sad, their music always makes me happier. When I'm happy, their music intensifies that.
Most Cd's I only buy for one or two songs, but I have almost every U2 CD at home, and How to dismantle an atomic bomb is probably my favorite one. When I bought that CD, and first listened to it, I was just amazed at how cool each song was. Each song brings you into a different U2 world. They don't just sing about one certain thing. They sing about love, religion, family, music, basically everything. If you want religion, listen to yahweh. If you want love, listen to man and a woman or original of the species. If you want excitement, listen to the whole album.
It is hard to choose a favorite song from this album. It was hard for me to believe that this album only had one single. They could have made Cd's from almost every song on there. They are that good. It was like listening to their greatest hits all over again. With these many Cd's though, every CD hasn't been legendary. Some of their earlier CD's I would only buy for a couple songs, but throughout the years, they have proved themselves to be successful, especially in this last CD. U2 and this album, will always remain a legend to me, and their music will be passed down through my generations, just as my family has come to know and love U2 and their music. I highly recommend this CD for everyone who truly loves music.
