The Grinch stole my heart, in theatres and in song.
Date of Review: Dec 3, 2000
If you liked the Grinch on theatres, you'll love this soundtrack. With great names such as Busta Rhymes, Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds, Smash Mouth, 'N Sync, and Faith Hill, there were a lot of good songs. Surprisingly, though, it was the Original Motion Picture songs, written by James Horner, that I really loved.
Track by Track:
- Throughout the soundtrack, similar to other soundtracks, there were short dialogues taken from the movie. If you saw the movie, these are perfect moments that bring back good memories from the movie. However, if you did not yet see it, or even if you didn't like it, these excerpts are hilarious at times anyway. For example, the critical point where the Grinch realizes Christmas is more than he thought is on one track. And other tracks include the Grinch's schedule (my personal favorite, "5:00, solve world hunger... tell no one."), and the reindeer/dog part where Jim Carrey does an imitation of Ron Howard.
- Busta Rhymes mixes with Jim Carrey to do a number called "Grinch 2000". I'm not a big fan of rap, but this track is not bad. (although possibly my least favorite)
-Bare Naked Ladies, my favorite group, does "Green Christmas", which is an interesting little ditty about the Grinch's lonely life at this time of year.
-Little Isidore and the Inquisitors. I've never heard this group, but they put together a nice, peppy song called "Christmas Love". Kinda reminds me of 60's music.
-Ben Folds is not one of my favorite bands, but this song, "Lonely Christmas Eve", was really good. Once again, this is a song about the poor old Grinch with no one to be with on Christmas Eve. Despite the name, (which sounds sad) this is a real upbeat song with a good melody and rythm and excellent vocals.
-Smash Mouth puts together a mediocre song with "Better Do It Right". When I say mediocre, I don't mean bad, but I don't mean good either. This song is good enough to listen to in between other songs, but it's not that great.
-The "Whoville Medley", by the Trans-Siberian Christmas, was pretty well performed. It is a combination of two songs, "Perfect Christmas Night" and "Grinch". Neither one was an instrumental like I thought they would be.
-The Eels perform in "Christmas is going to the dogs". Another good song, but not one of my personal favorites. It's a real peppy Christmas song.
-Jim Carrey sings "You're a Mean one, Mr. Grinch". This is awesome. It is one of the reasons I bought the soundtrack. It is very well done and funny as well.
-'N Sync is also not one of my favorite groups, but they served their purpose well here. They sing a slow, well harmonized love-type song called "You don't have to be alone".
-The last of the popular music is sung by Faith Hill. She does a remix of a song in the movie, named "Where are you Christmas". This is a very beautiful song, especially if you like Faith.
-The rest of the songs are all background music for the movie, written by James Horner. It is mainly composed of orchestral instrumentals, but there is some movie dialogue in it as well as some chorus songs sung by the Whos. This is my favorite part, because it brings back nostalgic parts in the movie. It will make you laugh, cry, or just feel good all over again. This is the type of music that I love the most.
OVERALL:
-The soundtrack is a very good mix of great types of music. It has good pop songs by BNL and Ben Folds, a rap mix with Busta Rhymes, and emotional songs by 'N Sync and Faith Hill. The rest of the songs outside of the original score by James Horner are up-beat songs that keep you moving.
-Like I said, the original score is great, setting the mood for excitement, fear, and reflection.
-Overall, this is a CD with a whole lot of good songs that are fun to listen to in the car or just while lying around the house.
- If you liked the movie, you'll love the soundtrack. Don't delay, get it now so you'll have good Christmas music to play. That way you don't have to play the same old Christmas songs done every year.
