Sorry to say, I'm Disappointed
Date of Review: Mar 27, 2005
The Bottom Line: A basic range with an excellent cooktop and broiler but mediocre self cleaning and uneven baking/roasting performance.
I bought this range to replace a Caloric Self Cleaning Range that required repairs to the electronic igniters on a regular basis. I selected this range due to its high rating by a leading consumer magazine.
Positives
The unit, though basic, has some nice features. Although you cannot enter time or temperature directly, the digital readout has up and down buttons that are easy to use. The unit also features a timer. Broiling is done in the oven itself. Below the oven is a storage drawer. The stove has one high burner, two mediums and one low burner.
The oven broils extraordinarily well. Steaks and chops come out perfect!
Negatives
Self cleaning is mediocre. Grease stains have been permanently imbedded in the inner door window that cannot be removed no matter what I do.
The oven is overly optimistic about reaching the preset temperature. I set it to 325 and it says 325 when the actual temperature (checked by THREE oven thermometers is 275). Once it gets to the temperature it is accurate, however. I'd allow an extra 10 minutes from when it says it reaches the temperature.
This oven cooks poultry unevenly. I recently cooked a turkey and after 3 hours the breast reached 180 degrees and the built in thermometer popped out. But when I carved the meat, some of the white meat was still pink or red! The same thing happened with a roasting chicken. I've got to say that my Weber gas grill cooked the roasting chicken evenly but this Hotpoint didn't.
