Not Battlezone, but good
Date of Review: Sep 14, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you liked Uprising you will like this. Good plot.
I was a huge fan of the original Battlezone game. I really got into the strategy/action mix.
This game tries to do a bit too much, but still ends up being fun. The plot is very well written and the voice acting is decent (although British). You control/command a super carrier that can manufacture vehicles, which you can send out with orders, or you can control them yourself. There are unique "personalities" that can control the vehicles and you get more of them as the game progresses. Which means that you start out with a maximum of two vehicles (one you can control and one with a personality chip), and work your way up to I think seven. There are some really neat plot twists and the graphics are decent.
I got into the plot but started tiring of the balance compromises that they made. The enemy anti-aircraft is amazingly accurate so you pretty much have to send in ground units to destroy the AA so you can then send in air units to finish the level. There is a degree of customization for each vehicle and you can arrange some neat battles.
I ended up using a cheat for the last battle because I was just tired to getting shot up. Most levels have a "trick" that lets you finish it easily (such as completing the objectives in reverse order). The last level is timed and I just got tired of trying different things.
Overall I enjoyed the game, wouldn't pay $50 though.
