Great for in between cleans! *Please read update!*
Date of Review: Jul 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: For light cleanups. Don't expect this to replace your full size vacuum. May not be for some carpet owners. Update: Broken after 4 months.
(The following is my original review, please read update below)If you are going to go out and buy one of these, don't think, "Gee, I'm going to buy this small, tiny, 50 dollar vacuum and I won't have to use my clumsy upright or canister vacuum ever again!" Wrong! Get this thought out of your mind, because you will be setting yourself up for disappointment. This is to use for in between your thorough floor cleanings.
I purchased this item because I needed something for quick, daily cleanups, and for my stairs, that was not bulky. With a husband and two kids in the house, it doesn't take long for debris to start appearing. The Swiffer was a first choice, but I nixed the idea because I don't like the thought of having to buy special refills. I have hardwood and tile throughout my house and I love this item, it does what I need it to do. I was surprised at how much dust and hair this picked up from my supposedly clean floors! It picks up decent sized debris, like my pet birds' cracked sunflower seed shells from around the cage. I am always cleaning up after those birds and this is a great help. The Hoover Slider has good brush action, it actually brushed away a piece of dried up, adhered lettuce from the floor. I was impressed. Also I have a low pile, black and grey bathmat, which looks great in my bathroom when it's clean, but after a day or two it needs cleaning again. Trying to vacuum this with my Miele vacuum is close to impossible. My Miele would suck the whole mat up if it could, it's not worth the struggle, so I always put it in the washing machine. The Hoover Slider is nice for this particular mat, just glide it over a few times and it's clean! It could use a little more suction, but it's sufficient.
There's no electric cord to get in your way! Hooray! I can use the Slider on my stairs without the regular hassles of a broom and dustpan or my bulky large vacuum. The swiveling head is wonderful, it can lay flat, and it will go under places I normally would have to lay on my stomach to clean. The head moves side to side as well, to get into tight areas
It's very easy to assemble, I didn't even have to read any assembly instructions. The handle locks into place. There's a place on the side of the handle to insert the cord for charging. Charging takes 16 hours, the first time it's charged. I was worried, "Where am I going to put this? There's no plug by the broom closet?" It's standing in my kitchen right now, stands on it's own, it doesn't have to lean against anything. It's so small it takes up an insignificant amount of room. It's styling and color doesn't detract from my kitchen, so it doesn't need to be hidden in the broom closet. The Slider has a pretty sturdy plastic body, I've seen sturdier, but again, it's sufficient. This has a handy small emptying cup and cleanable filter. No buying filters. It is a small cup, but hasn't been a problem so far.
I'm not sure if I would like this as much If I were to use this on a large room(s) of carpet. I think it would be more suited for low pile carpets. All I know is, it's great for hardwood and tile floors, and my couple of mats.
(Update) I can no longer recommend this item. I had this for approximately 4 months and it is already broken. The brush will not turn anymore and needs to be replaced, which I won't bother doing. When I took it apart I was surprised at how cheaply this was made inside. I used this mostly on hard surfaces, I can't believe this is broken already. When this was working, it was OK, but I always wished it had a little more suction. I will miss it, it was light weight and flexible, but hopefully I will find something that is better.
