Product Review

2004 Honda Accord as a replacement for a 1997 Firebird Formula

by   billo_99_1999 ,   Jul 17, 2005

Pros:  whooosh!; 6-speed-240hp; 0-60 in 5.9s; FWD in bad weather; heated seats

Cons:  boring style; little sister says I am old; engine noise wimpy; customer-service; FWD cornering

The Bottom Line:  I think this is the best car for the money. It has excellent acceleration, poor weather handling, and is top-notch in saftey.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I call it the whoosh effect. I was on my way to buy an Infiniti FX, but I promised myself a drive in stick shift Honda before I went the mini-van route. I had a 1997 Firebird Formula with 285 hp, but I found that the Honda Accord had a 0-60 time that was comparable (due to 300 less pounds of engine weight). I also noted that it had 5-star crash ratings for every category and a 4 star rollover rating. And it had heated seats!
Once I drove it I was amazed. The engine was quiet (on my F-bird I use to roll down the window to hear the throaty exhaust), but it just seemed to have infinite power.
The 6 speed manual was one of the slickest I have ever driven (my F-Bird 6 speed had CAGs [skipped 2nd and 3rd under moderate acceleration]). I like the shifting better than a 1998 Vette. I also was considering the G35 (which I killed the engine during the test drive [as did the salesman]). I just did not like the clutch on the G35 (0-60 in 6.1 seconds). The Accord was $5k cheaper than the G35 and $8K cheaper than the Fx and was quicker than either.
Front wheel drive with traction control is amazing compared to rear-wheel drive F-Bird. Of course, an ice cube has better traction than an F-Bird.
I hate the fact that Honda hassles you for worthless maintenance. They told me I need $600 of "routine maintenance" in the first 12K miles and they constantly try to guilt trip me into it. I have never understood why people pay huge repair bills for cars that nothing wrong with them. I hate the maintenance light you have to manually turn off that the dealer triggers to remind you of "routine maintenance." Oil changes and tire rotations sure, but why pay $100 a month in "routine maintenance." Plus they hassled me like crazy to get a loaner car which was standard at Pontiac.
The car is ugly on the outside, but seats 5 on the inside. Dual climate control is the best thing since sliced bread.
I miss the rear wheel drive during cornering and u-turns. Nothing like kicking the back end around on the curves.
A moon-roof is much easier to use than T-tops.
