Daft Punk are one of the artists at the cutting edge of the French electronica movement of the late 90s, and this LP shows why.
They are probably the only electronic band who can get away with 6/7/8 minute songs without getting boring. Some songs on the album may be considered a little repetitive for many listeners, but on closer inspection anyone with a slither of natural rhythm will realize that the drum and bassline changes are constantly and inventively changing, ensuring none of the tracks ever become redundant.
The LP opens with "Daftendirekt", a simple thumper with fantastic dynamics (anyone who plays around with synths or studio software will love the timing of the open hi-hats). It's a good taste of things to come. "Da Funk" (track 4) is what D.P do best, and has one of my favorite intros ever. A simple electronic hook starts the track, and then gives way to a thumping beat which brings the main riff back in. Absolutely nothing fancy, it just makes you say "Oh Yeaahhhh!" Listen to this track LOUD, it's a classic.
Track 5 (Phoenix) is a little disappointing. The guys get a little experimental with the drum machines and the tune never really takes off. A good example of "less is more" when it comes to electronic music.
"Around the World" (the hit single off the record) is fun but in my opinion not one of the better tracks on the LP. Track 8 however is a beast. "Rollin' and Scratchin'" is a track in a world of it's own. Again, D.P win with simplicity, and it gets no more simple than this. It starts with a dulled snare sound beating over and over, and gradually a broken computerized noise comes in. This continues for about 2 minutes with some glorious drum work, then fades out giving way to a different noise which comes in off-beat on the same drum line. So simple, so heavy, so ingenious.
"Teachers" is a great idea track ... catchy rhythm with the names of many pioneers in the electronica/breakbeat school of music.
