If You Dare, Go Home For The Holidays!

Date of Review:  Jul 9, 2005
The Bottom Line: Not a Hallmark movie.
Review:
There are three kinds of people in the world: those who only enjoy journey's end (or imagining it), those who only enjoy the journey, and those who have no preference, which could be a positive or negative thing. If you're going to enjoy 1995's...

Hard to Watch

Date of Review:  May 27, 2008
The Bottom Line: This was a lousy movie filled with loud, unpleasant, uninteresting people.
Review: I have a Netflix subscription, so one day while looking at the offerings I decided that Home for the Holidays sounded like a fun comedy. Starring several people that I like to watch in movies (Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Anne Bancroft and...

My favorite back home to squabble Thanksgiving movie

Date of Review:  Dec 6, 2009
The Bottom Line: Hasn't held up as much as I hoped, but the cast is even more impressive than it seemed in 1995.

Review: I made my "Best Christmas movies" posting into a “holidaze” one to accommodate “Home for the Holidays,” a Thanksgiving homecoming movie produced and directed by Jodie Foster in 1995. When I started to watch it again, it did not seem to live up to my...

Preparation for the journey home: A Thanksgiving must-read

Date of Review:  Nov 17, 2000
Review: Please, no, don't let it be that time of year already!
There are flurries in the air, the muzak in the mall has started playing Christmas carols, and my next door neighbor just finished stringing lights along his balcony. Obviously, it that...

Holiday treat for all seasons

Date of Review:  Apr 26, 2000
Review: Home For the Holidays is the second directorial treat from Academy Award winner (one that I actually agree with) Jodie Foster. Like Little Man Tate, her first venture behind the lens, HFtH also focuses on a specific family centered environment,...

Holiday Histrionics

Date of Review:  Nov 18, 2001
The Bottom Line: Touching portrayal of the tradition of family holiday gatherings, told with humor and poignancy.
Review: Well, it's almost time for the Holidays! The one time of year that most of us look forward to, even though it painfully exposes the best and worst of all of us in the microcosm of our closest relationships.

Home For The Holidays is one...

Holidays with the Family?

Date of Review:  Nov 22, 2001
The Bottom Line: Holly Hunter, Dylan McDermott, Robert Downey Junior and Anne Bancroft carry this movie right till the end.
Review: Enter Claudia (Holly Hunter), a mom who just lost her job and has going back to her crazy family on the East coast to look forward to for Thanksgiving. Not to mention, her 16 year old daughter (Claire Danes) just admitted she is going to have sex,...

Ma, izzat YOU?!?

Date of Review:  Oct 7, 2000
Review: I never watched "Thirty-Something" because I was too tired to come home and watch my day all over again. This movie should make me react the same way, but it doesn't, and I'm not entirely sure why I love it so much.

First off: Opening scene...

Float, Breathe and remember the Fish!

Date of Review:  Aug 28, 2003
The Bottom Line: The perfect movie to watch and reflect on before venturing among hostile relatives (or even friendly ones).
Review: I originally watched this movie because Holly Hunter was starring and her movies tend to have depth and meaning. Then the credits role and Jodie Foster is directing, how could you miss? You can't.

This is a warm, witty and brutally honest...

does this sound familiar?

Date of Review:  Jan 17, 2000
Review: It start out with Holly Hunter losing her job in a museum and everything goes down hill from there. This also stars Robert Downey and Dylan McDermmit and it is absolutely hilarious. We all have experienced that going home for the holidays syndrome...
