Product Review

CM772 - higher scan rates

by   avion ,   Feb 18, 2001

Pros:  Beautifully clear, sharp and flat - the best monitor I've ever used.

Cons:  None yet!

The Bottom Line:  The true flat screen, fine dot pitch, high scan rates, and excellent color contrast provide the best picture you could hope to see, all in a compact package.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

The Hitachi CM771 was highly rated by a ZDNet review last fall, and the CM772 came out soon after. (It's rated separately in several ZDNet.com articles dated 19 January 2001.) The CM772 is the same size and has all the same specs except for higher scan rates, making for a slightly clearer picture. Street prices are ~$50-60 more than the CM771, but it's well worth the difference.

I've always heard that any dot pitch under .26 is fine, but the CM771/772's .22 dot pitch is noticeably finer and the picture crisper than the .25 dot pitch monitors I've used.

Color is another area these two monitors excel: just like Tide, the whites are whiter and the darks are darker! It really brings out the fine contrast in photographic images and video. If they look good on this monitor, they'll look good anywhere.

I replaced a NEC 5FG 15" monitor with this one. The CM772 was both lighter in weight and slightly shallower in depth than the 5FG, quite a feat for a 19" monitor!
