Author's Review

This is my first epinion so please bare with me while I go through how great this monitor is. :)

I will start off by saying that this is the best monitor for your money on the block. It utilizes a Invar shadow-mask opposed to aperture-grille like many other monitors on the market. More about the Invar shadow-mask later. The Superscan 771 has a .22mm horizontal dot pinch allowing it to provide the best image possible. Most other monitors in this price range have around a .25mm or .26mm dot pinch which is substantially higher than Hitachi's .22mm dot pinch.

When I took this monitor to my friends house to play some games over a LAN and he was amazed at how much brighter and vivid the colors were. Small text even at the highest resolution of 1600x1200 is very legible. Changing settings for the monitor are easy as pie. There are five buttons on the front of the monitor which provide onscreen controls. You may adjust the brightness, width and height of the screen and more in a flash. The Invar shadow-mask also helps to reduce the amount of time's you have to re-adjust your monitor settings due to a it's reflection yoke.

The high refresh rate of 75Hz at 1600x1200 will keep your eyes feeling good at any resolution unlike some other monitors which offer a low refresh rate at the high resolutions. The monitor is also VERY small for a 19 inch CRT monitor. I measured a depth of less than 18 inches in the back so it will fit on nearly all desks. The only gripes are no USB support and no built in microphone. The pros far outweigh the cons though. If you would rather have a brilliant image instead of an okay image and USB support, go with the Hitachi Superscan 771.
