Author's Review
When it comes to the High School Musical movies, if you see one, then you have to see them all- at least that seems to be the rule around here. Recently, we decided to rent High School Musical 2 and we are anxiously awaiting HSM 3 to be released on DVD.
Just to back track a little here- in the first High School Musical movie, Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), a brainy girl moves to a new school and she and the school jock Troy (Zac Efron) form a relationship based on their love for music that brings them together.
Anyway, in this sequel to High School Musical, its summer vacation and the crew has just gotten out of school that day. The cast gets summer jobs at a hoity toidy country club where Sharpay and Ryan are members as well as their parents. Sharpay's (Ashley Tisdale) original plan is to just get Troy hired since she is now romantically interested in him, but the rest of the crew also get hired (as well as his girlfriend Gabriella).
Troy is beginning to worry about college- where he'll get in- if he can get in and that sort of stuff. Sharpay plays on this worry by showing him that she can get him hooked up with some very influential people due to her rich parents' connections. She gets the country club manager to get Troy out of his job in the kitchen and caddy for her parents and gets them talking about college and who her dad can introduce him to and whatnot. Sharpay drives a wedge between him and Gabriella by doing this.
On into the movie, Troy starts to change- he really enjoys going to play basketball with these college players that Sharpay's dad introduce him to and such and so, so he spends less and less time with his real friends, and his girlfriend as well, so towards the end Gabriella breaks up with him.
So, Troy realizes what he's done and drops all the hoity toidy-ness and gets back to the way things were before. Everybody makes up- hug hug, and whatnot at the end.
As for the music- there are some pretty good songs on there, but I will admit that this soundtrack as well as the movie is not as good as the very first one.
One character that really gets on my nerves in this movie is Sharpay- she is the essence of a spoiled rich kid in this movie- and I really don't think that's the image that they need to be giving out, especially to young kids. My kids see her as mean and stimey (which is a word we use at home) and means she is being hard to deal with. So, my kids know how she is and just see her as a mean girl trying to break up Gabriella and Troy.
Anyway, as far as my rating goes- well it's average- I was much more impressed with the first movie, but of course if you have a HSM fan, then you're probably going to see it anyway.
