Author's Review
I'm not cheap. I'll deny it to the bitter end. What I am is a realist. I do not see the need to spend more money on something than is necessary. Hence my purchase of the HP 612, a camera that does what I need, and fell neatly into my price range.
For me, I was looking for a digital camera that would take quality pictures (mostly posed shots) that I could turn into prints if desired. No videos. No incredibly high resolution. No bells, and certainly no whistles.
This camera serves my purposes nicely. It's easy to use, with the preview window nicely sized and the buttons large and easy to find. The setup is easy, the menu options are clear, and the accompanying software is very straightforward.
My only complaints are that it's bulky, which is a source of entertainment for my more technologically advanced friends, and that the preview window sucks back the batteries. A thick skin and a pack of rechargeable batteries cured these ailments well enough. The shutter lag, however, is just long enough to frustrate the proud parent trying to catch baby's first smile or thumb sucking.
The main thing is that for the price, it's a cheap alternative to developing the thousands of photos I'll take over the next year, and it makes it easy to do it.
