Product Review

A nice, functional and well designed camera overall.

by   genemartin ,   Nov 23, 2005

Pros:  Simple, automated; several shooting options; specialized rechargeable battery.

Cons:  Could have more manual options; night time pictures are a bit dim and grainy.

The Bottom Line:  Great for those entering the world of digital photography, because the camera is simple, has several pre-set shooting modes and produces decent images at 4.1 megapixels.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I have had my R607 for about 6 months now and it suits me well. It was time to change the old Ixla, and I did my research before buying a camera, so this one seemed like a decent buy at $199 CAD (Staples Business Depot online).

The camera works well, although I haven't tried all of its features yet (such as Panoramic mode). Images are bright enough (when taken with sufficient light) and sharp enough (when proper focusing time is allowed).
In the dark, however, pics often come out dim and grainy. Best solution for this would be to shoot from a shorter distance while using flash or tinker with longer exposures and a tripod - for still objects, of course.

The camera is miniature enough to fit into the palm of my hand, yet I have not yet missed a control button - they all are made logically and conveniently.

Built-in manual controls, such as ISO choices, EV correction and priority settings help improve pics in special situations, leaving less work for image editing software afterward. The built-in Red eye removal feature works nicely in most situations.
The Adaptive lighting feature determines which parts of the image are too dark and helps level out the problem, with hardly any negative effect on the quality of picture.

The lens is by Pentax, as per the signage on the camera, and it feels a bit loose when extended. This may not be such a big deal, but I feel a bit iffy about that. Speaking of the lens, get a soft carrying case for this camera, she will like it. The lens has an automatic cover, which looks very tender. The camera came without a case, but with a wrist strap.

One problem is related to the short focus distance of the lens: at close ranges in normal mode, the object is distorted (the "bulging" effect, when, for example, if a face is photographed, the nose and mouth look larger than they should. The same happens at certain angles when capturing people standing: legs may seem shorter). But I understand that this is common to the majority of short-focus lenses.

Macro and super-macro modes allow to capture images of tiny objects. I was able to obtain sharp images of a single key on my computer keyboard and a ladybug crawling on a log - both in super macro mode.

We recently had some pictures printed on Kodak equipment at Wal-Mart, and they came out much, much better than those that usually came from a 35-mm point-and-shoot camera: sharper, better lit. Every single whisker and every hair on our cat was not only visible, but sharp.

The battery is similar to those found in cell phones, and I think it is a plus. The capacity may not be the best, but it allows to take a reasonable number of pictures and or video clips, but one has to be careful about overusing the LCD viewfinder - the major energy consumer. Use the optical viewfinder instead (it zooms, too!) and you will have you battery last long.

Transferring pictures from the camera to a computer (USB required) is a breeze, with or without HP's specialized software. The software then allows to further enhance and organize pictures, but I use Picasa instead. I burn my picture CDs with Nero.

I am happy with this camera and will keep it as long as I can.
