Product Review

HP Pavilion dv2000t Notebook PC

by   cflorida ,   Jul 29, 2006

Pros:  Responsive, very light weight

Cons:  New keyboard layout, screen gloss

The Bottom Line:  This laptop is fantastic, but isn't for me. Recommend a trip to a retail outlet to test one out before purchasing. Excellent speed and portability but poor design.

Overall Rating: 3/5 stars

Author's Review

I purchased this laptop with 2gb ram, Intel duo core 2500 (2.0) and the 12 volt battery -- all upgrades to the base model.

While it is extremely light at just over 5 pounds (plus one for the battery) and VERY quick and responsive, I am returning it to HP.

The reason for this was the keyboard layout. The new keyboard layout is not centered to the machine. Rather than having the F and J keys centered to either side of the touchpad, the J key is centered to the touchpad. This means that your right thumb palm rests on the touch pad while typing and both hands are much closer together (and to the left of center).

Fortunately, HP models all come with a button to disable the touchpad (unlike Dell which is controlled by software), but it is annoying to have to turn it off and back on vs risking wiping out your data that you just entered with one swipe.

In speaking to the HP rep today about returning the model (which they were VERY gracious about!), he mentioned that all HP laptops are now being built with this new keyboard layout.

My recommendation to anyone considering this model (or any HP laptop) is to head over to a retail outlet where they are on display and test one out to see if you are comfortable with it. Many reviews stated that this is an improvement, so my issues with it not being comfortable to work with will not apply to all.
