Product Review

Newer IS better, but there has to be a catch!

by   POSTALET ,   Jun 19, 2008

Pros:  VGA, speed, WM6 compatibility.

Cons:  Input delays, Input delays, . . .I ______nput del_______ays

The Bottom Line:  Best of the PDAs - all-around compatible. Easier to exchange data, G-WiFi, and VGA screen.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

Two Week review:
I had an RX3715 with WinCE 2003 SE (AKA:WinMobile4). My fiance has a VGA 4705 which I upgraded to WinMobile 5. The upgrade had better features, but seemed to slow the faster processor down (as always). After three years on the "multi-media" PDA which wasn't used very often for its MM stuff, I figured I'd get a faster processor, and my envy of the VGA screen on my fiance's PDA made me buy the latest greatest HP 211 (reading E-mail or web on the road in "one-column mode" on QuarterVGA pales when compared to VGA. The 128 Meg of Ram is great (no more "Contacts is using too much memory" - close something or I'll die on you when you are in the middle of saving), and the layout and features of WinMob 6.0 are indeed better. But ... (you knew that a “but” was coming) the operation of the device is strange. I've read a lot of reviews about how the screen is less sensitive, and you have to hit it harder to register keystrokes, but I have found that it is the processor that isn't recognizing the strokes, not the screen. The “hit it harder” must be from frustration, because I find myself hitting it harder to make it recognize my input. There seem to be a lot of background operations that use the processor. The unfortunate part is the screen queue seems to frequently (but not always) store hits, and then when the screen changes, it uses those locations to enter the hits as they occur in order, but not WHAT they should have (right location, wrong screen) . (Wow, how did I get to OZ, Auntie Em?, last I knew I was in Mobile Excel entering data). Maybe I should just wait 3-4 seconds to see if it took (it doesn't always flash), instead of hitting it harder many times.
I haven't yet found a way to see what is using up much of the 600 MHz, apparently lots of software companies have changed in three years, and getting upgrades seems to be low on the support list (battery pack pro, pocket mechanic, 1-calc are all from the same company, maybe all eggs in one basket is better for compatibility, but not for upgrading now). The upgrades are for sale at regular price, so it isn't an out-of-business dead end, just no response from sales/tech support.
All things considered, sometimes it's the quirks that make me enjoy using a device, like the 56 M RAM of the RX3715( why not 8 more for 64M? and how can I open a spreadsheet and email it using contacts at the same time?) . This 211 probably won't do that for a year or two, the delays are infuriating, but other than the delay for input, I haven't found the quirks yet. The loss of data using “OK” at the top right is understandable considering it is mostly now an “X” and the “OK” is then on lower left of the WM6 screens, similar to WM2003SE, but just enough different. (just be aware that three years of using a device means at least that many big mistakes before re-training takes effect. Also known as “Read the FULL Screen”)
The VGA is great, the sensor for screen brightness is handy, no more “settings/system/backlight/brightness” , but also functions as a access indicator when connected to PC on USB charge/sync, the screen dims frequently while the orange/green charge LED lights (Don't try to enter data while this is happening). I got a bluetooth folding keyboard, but with (keyboard’s and also 211’s Bluetooth enabled) battery drain, and the same entry delay, I find it will be shelved and not used. The VGA screen allows much better entry on the screen keyboard than the QVGA, and fewer (1 in 2 weeks) screen alignments. I do have a problem with the Letter Recognizer and Transcriber, but that is probably me not being used to it. The battery life is not what others have said, for me it is about 5 hours without Bluetooth or WiFi, and 2 hours using Wifi. Respectable, but not what I had hoped. To be honest “ 802.11G” is more than 10x faster than “B,” so it seems I can do much more. Entry delay aside, the excel performance is wonderful, the MobileWord processing is better than the WM2003SE, and much more compatible, but the delay is most noticeable here. I am still not a Multimedia fan, so I can’t comment on WM6’s version if I don’t use it, other than to say pictures are nicer on larger/more detailed screen.
I prefer this PDA, I expect to find someone who has figured out the input delay problem, and only miss the occasionally-used camera (I ALWAYS have my PDA, like some people always have their cell phone, so the camera has been handy (maybe three times in the first year), but with cell phones now all sporting cameras, I don’t expect to need it. I think it will prove to be a fine upgrade, and I am using it about 95% of the time (weaning myself off of the 3715, as I figure out how to accomplish things on the new one). If purchasing a PDA for the first time, I don’t think you can appreciate all the differences; you’ll just have to enjoy it. (Again, that input delay thing will spoil things). I carry an Encyclopedia (Lexipedia, but revolution.cx software Co. doesn’t seem to be functioning anymore), several dictionaries, Mobipocket E-books, Excel sheets, etc on one 2gig SD card until I fill it, then it will be replaced by an SDHC card. ( the CF cards are about 1/3 the write speed, so I just keep songs and pictures on CF, I want my data, NOW!)
