WLAN works worse than poorly, crashes, scanning does not work
Date of Review: Feb 20, 2006
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this thing! The only real use of it is as a stand-alone unit!
Bought this piece a couple of months ago and had nothing but trouble with it. Setting up the WLAN was very easy thanks to the LCD, getting it to work was however not possible.. I've had numerous contacts with the HP support which has resulted in one replacement of the entire printer, and turning of the uPnP-feature just to make the machine survive the night (which the feature turned on it crashed every 5 hours or so). So, not the WLAN can be turned on without crashing the machine. It does however only work from time to time, and when it does its performance is below usable (printing an A4 with some text can take 15 mins!) I've tested other WLAN units at the exact same place and they work just fine. So WLAN with this machine is out of the question.
So, to the other big disappoitment; Scanning. It is not practically possible to do professional scanning from negatives or dia with the PC SW. It is hard to describle how it is possible to produce software this bad in this little space, but lets just say that all you can read on the web about the bad quality of the HP printer-drivers and scanner-GUIs is absolutely true.
At last a thing about the HP support. Although very nice people it does not seem to be possible to make HP fix bugs by reporting them to the support. There have only been two updates of the PC SW (and none for the HW) during a four month period, and this despite that there are tons of obvious bugs in it! Being a part of a large SW organisation myself I can only see this as that HP does not case about product that have already been released..
I'm a software pro in the telecom industry and do not see myself as technically incapable, but this machine and its PC software can do really bad things with you confidence.. Do not buy it!
