Author's Review
Terrible experience. Cumbersome, bloated software install where even the MINIMAL option installs some kind of HP "Share to Web" app and something called "Memories Disc". Wouldn't scan by using the buttons on the scanner or opening the HP software, but inexplicably WOULD scan if I opened the HP software from within Photoshop's import menu.
After all that, I discovered that the document feeder "doesn't work for photos". See below for transcript from HP support. I just returned mine to where I purchased it. Should have checked Epinions first, I guess, since everybody else that bought one hated it too.
Santiago: Hello Brian
Brian Siebenschuh: Hello
Santiago: Welcome to HP Total Care for Photosmart products. My name is Santiago, How may I assist you today?
Brian Siebenschuh: Just purchased a scanjet 5590 w/ doc feeder. all pictures i scan with the adf have a blueish tint across the bottom 1/3 of the image. i installed a patch which sounded like it was written for this issue, but i don't notice a difference.
Santiago: I see.
Santiago: Is the issue only when scanning from ADF of the scanner?
Brian Siebenschuh: Yes. Scan of the same photo on the flatbed comes out fine.
Santiago: Okay.
Santiago: I understand that you bought new HP 5590 scanner and when scanning any document from the ADF you see blue tint on the scanned image. When scanning the same document from the scanner bed the scanned image is fine. To resolve the issue you installed the patch but the issue persists. Am I correct?
Brian Siebenschuh: Yes.
Santiago: May I know the size of the documents that you are scanning.
Brian Siebenschuh: 4x6 35mm photo prints.
Santiago: Brian, I would like to inform you that the ADF shipped with the HP 5590 scanner is only for scanning documents and not for scanning the pictures.
Santiago: So I suggest you any A4 documents from the ADF of the scanner and let me know the quality of the scanned image.
Brian Siebenschuh: That's ridiculous. I bought it specifically to scan pictures. How would someone know before purchasing that the ADF doesn't work for photos?
Santiago: Brian, you can find the HP 5590 scanner specification.
Brian Siebenschuh: Where can I find this information?
Santiago: ADF specifications for the HP 5590 scanner are
1.Standard, 50 sheets
2.Paper sizes supported: Letter, A4, custom, legal (legal in simplex mode only)
3.Two-sided, multi-page scans
4.Scan speed: Up to 8 ppm single-sided, 4 ipm two-sided
Brian Siebenschuh: So it will scan an 8.5x11 (letter size) photograph without the blue tint?
Santiago: It will scan 8.5 X 11 size documents and not the photographs as the thickness of the photographs are more when compared to the documents.
Santiago: Also when you try to scan photo graphs through the feeder, they may spoil
Brian Siebenschuh: Spoil?
Santiago: I mean the photosmay get damaged when trying to scan from the ADF of the scanner.
Brian Siebenschuh: My manual says "NOTE: Avoid putting multipart forms, transparencies, magazine pages, gum-backed pages, and lightweight paper in the ADF." It doesn't say anything about photographs.
Santiago: I understand Brian, but this scanner is specially designed to scan documents.
Brian Siebenschuh: This is ridiculous. I'll just return it.
Santiago: Brian, I understand but ADF that is shipped with the HP 5590 scanner is Automatic Document feeder. This can be used only for scanning normal documents
Santiago: I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.
