First impressions
I've been a Hewlett Packard fan since I purchased a LaserJet II printer and a ScanJet scanner nearly 20 years ago (has it really been that long? Wow!). Not to say that I haven't had issues with some of the equipment produced – I have, but I am definitely biased so keep that in mind as you read this review.
Working for a rather large company in an environment where document production is critical creates a need for superior in-house printing solution. The HP LaserJet 5000N printer had a huge array of features to meet our needs starting with the 17 page per minute printing which was fast, fast, fast when the printer was purchased about seven years ago. Then there is the paper handling capacity – 800 sheets if you utilized all the trays with a printer that fits neatly on a countertop – nice!
Digging Deeper
Our HP LaserJet 5000N is networked as shared by over a dozen people and used to print everything from small CAD drawings to contracts and proposals that can be thousands of pages long.
The 1200 x 1200 DPI resolution produces the sharpest images and documents when needed and for everyday applications the 600 DPI can't be beat. Even at those resolutions the toner seems to last and last and output is certainly better than other laser printers our company owns.
Durability and Dependability
Our company has had this printer nearly seven years and I don't believe we have ever called outside service to repair it. What a testament to the LaserJet 5000N's superior design and construction And don't think we rarely use it – nothing could be further from the truth. There are days when the 5000N runs nearly non-stop. On top of that, the LaserJet 5000N rarely jams and when it does clearing the paper path is an easy task.
On the negative side...
HP's marketing hype says "Print from 3x5 inch to full-bleed 11x17 images...". Full bleed by the way is when an image runs off the paper ie. a black background that runs right up to the edge of the page. Reading further you find that this is "
by printing images on larger paper that can be trimmed to the edges of the images." Translated, that means that the printer can do full bleed 11x17's if you have a trimmer and that most all 11x17 printers can do full bleed prints, just not the 11x17. Not really a big deal, just a little to much hype for my appetite.
