Author's Review
We have purchased several of these printer in the past few months, all of which have been problem-free from the beginning.
The 4050 is the model used to replace the old LaserJet 6 model, as the two cases look remarkably similar. The 4050 models we have are network-ready, with a built in JetDirect card for easy print server mounting. The software that comes bundled with said printer is also very easy to use for the intermediate PC administrator. If you have a home or small business LAN, I highly recommend this feature, as it is easy to set up and has been working perfectly from day 1.
The print quality of this series is excellent, and has not smudged or had toner bleed on the pages to my memory. Memory is easily upgradable, albeit somewhat expensive. This is what I call a "no-frills" printer simply because when loading the printer to the desktop via drivers, there are very few software tools that have to be loaded in order for the printer to function well. There are, of course, software packages available to give you more options while printing, but I believe in the "less is more" approach to printing. All the options you need to print can be found in the Printer properties tabs.
If there is one warning I have, it would be this: Make SURE you have the most recent driver files from HP's web site before installing this printer. The drivers that ship with some of the earlier models have caused serious errors on our NT machines until the new drivers were pulled from HP's excellent website (another plus).
Other than that one flaw, I highly recommend this printer to small or medium sized businesses that need a printer with good output, high quality, and general ease of use.
