Author's Review
The HP 4050 printer has been chosen by our business to go into one of the most highly demanding areas requiring total accuracy and quickness.
The printer has a 133 megahertz processor and an HP Jet Direct internal print server to increase the quickness of the printer by attaching it to our network. The printer produces an incredible 17 pages per minute with the first page coming out in about 10 seconds with a print quality of 1200 dpi.
Since we're using this printer in an area where there's a great deal of the public being processed at the same time, the quickness of this printer is its main selling point. The copy quality while important to us is a secondary concern. Under normal usage, this printer should be able to produce about 65,000 pages per month before calling for maintenance.
One of the drawbacks of this printer is that it does not print in color. However, for our purposes, we do not need to have color printing. Most of our printing is text forms from either Word, Adobe, or Crystal Reports. All of these forms that are produced from our external applications work remarkably well.
The HP 4050 supports many types of drivers including those for Windows 95, 98, NT 4.x; IBM OS/2 Warp; MS-DOS; HP-UX, and Solaris. We currently have this printer connected onto a Novell 3.12 network, which will be eventually be replaced sometime at the end of this year with a Novell 4.11 Network Operating System.
Overall though, this printer is an excellent addition to our printer inventory. It does what it is supposed to do without any flaws or hesitation and I highly recommend it for departmental or enterprise use.
