Product Review

Great...once you get up and running

by   wendyb1 ,   Jun 22, 2001

Pros:  Looks sleek with excellent print quality, exceptional scanning, good speed

Cons:  Horrible setup process, no "OFF" switch

The Bottom Line:  The quality and functionality of this all-in-one is exceptional, once you're up and running. Plan plenty of time for setup, and do it during tech support hours.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

I'll start by saying that this is a fantastic all-in-one, with great print clarity, decent speed (9 pages/minute), quality scanning and good paper flow design. Standard HP Quality. Overall, I'm very happy with it.

PAPER FEEDING: I have yet to have a single paper jam, although it occasionally feeds an extra blank page through when printing from the internet. Annoying, but not a big problem.

SCANNING: I was pleasantly surprised that I could scan 4X6 photographs with no damage to them and perfect output quality. The way the feeder for scanning is designed, the items follow a very straight path and are actually in the machine a very short time. I did have to figure out on my own how to get the file size to reduce--everything was coming out at least 1MB, but after opening the image in another program and saving as a .jpg, they were very small. The documentation didn't describe that at all.

SETUP: I have a home office, and was previously using an HP Officejet 720, a color Inkjet. I have a bit of systems background, so when it arrived in the box I was confident that I could set it up in under an hour with relatively few problems. I also assumed that since I was replacing an HP fax/copier/scanner/printer with another HP, that I could just plug everything in, load the new drivers and be on my way. I was terribly wrong.

Physical setup wasn't too difficult, and loading the software was easy--until it asked me to reboot at the end. At this point, my laptop (IBM Thinkpad T20) gave me a message that it couldn't load windows. Heart-attack!!!
I tried every trick I knew to get into windows, and nothing worked, so I called a tech-savvy colleague of mine with the same hardware, and she said confirmed the same setup drama. Tech support had her edit her autoexec.bat to fix the problem, so I called tech support. They were very friendly, and tried to help me get windows loaded, to no avail. After about 45 minutes on the phone (not an 800#), I convinced them to look up the my colleagues old support call to find the solution. We were able to edit the autoexec.bat and load windows. One problem down and one to go.

Phone lines: As I skimmed the instructions, they mentioned that there are particular phone setups that don't work well. I tried every configuration possible to get a dial tone from one of my two phone lines. As long as I had the line plugged directly to the fax with no additional phone going to it, it worked, otherwise, no dial tones. Support didn't have much help to offer on this issue, other than to get two completely dedicated lines with no call waiting or voice mail. Not practical, to say the least. After another 45 minutes and a brainstorm, I got a splitter for the jack that has both lines on it--and that worked. In this case, it seems like where there is a will, there is a way. As long as you have 3+ hours to spend fighting with it.
