Author's Review
I bought my HP Laserjet 1100 over two years ago. It was mostly an impulse buy, but I was doing some research at the time and wanted a faster printer than the slow, low-quality color printer (different brand) one I had. I absolutely love this printer. It prints as fast as those really expensive printers they have at work, and the print is clean, sharp, and dark (IAW the black isn't dull and grayish looking). It was very easy to set up with the software it came with- and I also found that I don't even need the software for it anyway as the drivers are already on Windows 98 SE. It has two slots- one for paper and one for envelopes which is nice when you're printing out formal letters, etc, since you don't have to remove your stack of paper to put in the envelope. There is also a switch on the front that lets you have the printed page drop in front of the printer or slide up into a holding tray- I really like that since everything my old printer printed used to slide right off the desk and onto the floor. It holds quite a bit of paper at once so you aren't constantly feeding it more. With my old printer I was constantly running out of ink right in the middle of a large print job, so to be safe I bought an extra toner cartridge when I bought the laserjet. Like I said, I've had this printer for over 2 years, I have used it everyday and printed thousands of things and the original toner is STILL going!! It hasn't decreased in color or sharpness at all. My "replacement" toner is still in the closet, unopened. I also have never had any problem with the printer jamming or just being quirky- it runs as well today as the day I bought it. I don't remember exactly how many PPM the manual says it prints, but it takes me longer to tell the computer to print a page than it does for the printer to actually print it. I haven't added anything to it, but there are attachments available to make it a scanner/fax as well. Now for the cons, which really aren't bad at all- it's a black and white printer- not color, the toner cartridges were about $45 2 years ago- I think they are about $55-65 now depending on where you get them (but they last forever so it's not expensive in comparison), and it's a little big if you have limited desk space(about 12"x12"x12"). We have ours on a printer stand so it's not too bad. It's overall an excellent buy!
