Author's Review
I bought this printer when it first came out. I was tired of Epson and Canon printers that consumed ink like oxygen and were forever jamming or giving me problems. As a social sciences student, I print a lot of journal articles and my own authored papers, so I need something that works every time, to cut down on the stress of last minute printing, ten minutes before class.
I admit I was drawn to the 5550 first because it was an HP and second because it looked cool and futuristic, but in the 5 years I've had it, I've come to depend on it as a solid, reliable printer. The black quality is strong, even at the draft setting (which is where i leave it most times). I like the manual duplex feature and the colour quality, on the rare times I use it, is outstanding. The print cartridges (56 for black, 57 for everyday colour) are still easy to find everywhere, including Costco and aren't expensive relative to others. I figure I probably get almost 3000 pages on a black cartridge, which is great. Printing is noisy, because of the way the paper feeds into the printer, but it rarely ever jams. I put a wireless printer adapter on it that hooks into the serial port and I love the fact that I can now print from my laptop anywhere in the house, flawlessly every time. All in all, it's a very impressive printer! I've had it five years and it is still going strong. At this rate, it will see me through both my MA and PhD studies! HP really seems to know their stuff!
