The HP LaserJet 5 Refurbished Printer Is An Excellent Printer for Home Businesses
Date of Review: Dec 6, 2001
The Bottom Line: The HP LaserJet 5 Refurbished printer is an ideal printer for a smaller home based business.
One of the things that I am glad is happening in the hardware world is that older printers that have been used by more prosperous businesses are being refurbished and recycled back into production. This helps with the problem that I see now of having computer components ?trashed? out into junk yards where it will probably take forever to decay (if it ever does!).
One of the best printers that I have ever dealt with early in my business career has been the HP LaserJet 5 printer. It was extremely compatible with a former report writing software that I used back years ago called Xtrieve that had only basic print commands comparable to a HP LaserJet II series printer.
Because of its reliability and easy maintenance, I remember this printer well, and it was only when our company decided to upgrade to more larger capacity printers that this one began to be sent to surplus.
HP LaserJet 5
The HP LaserJet 5 printer makes fast and clean print jobs. Printing between 10 and 12 pages a minute, this printer is ideal for a mid-sized workstation environment. Our business had this printer assigned to clerks who sent out notices and other official documents using both letter and legal sized paper. In addition, the envelope feeder was also used extensively addressing envelopes out of Word Perfect as well as other software packages. The HP LaserJet 5 printer prints 600 dpi, and prints text extremely well as most line art and most graphics.
The really great thing about this printer and its advancement from the HP 4 series of printers is that the HP Laserjet 5 prints bi-directional. This further increases the speed of the printer from lower class models of the past, and this is one of the reasons I believe that HP 5 printers are a much better deal refurbished than the HP 4 or 3 models.
Changing the toner of these printers is very simple and a breeze. Even my kid can do it! In addition to the ease of changing the toner, the printers themselves are very toner efficient and this makes for a more cost effective process of printing. In addition, since this printer has been on the market for quite some time it is also possible and probable that refurbished toners will be readily available at a substantially lower price than new.
Another great feature of the HP Laserjet 5 printer is that they can use a HP Jet Direct card for Ethernet networking purposes. On Novell networks, the use of these cards saved us a tremendous amount of printer troubleshooting and service time further streamlining our help desk department?s service calls.
But It?s Refurbished, How Good Can It Be?
Having purchased several refurbished printers before, I can state for the record that I trust the quality of the HP LaserJet refurbished printers tremendously. Their performance as new printers is phenomenal, and the refurbished models, especially of older machines keeps that tradition. I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that if you purchase this machine it will work absolutely flawlessly and give you plenty of years of service.
The machines that we sent to surplus were technically refurbished because of the work we had done on the via the technicians at HP, and I would have felt perfectly fine with purchasing one of these printers at a surplus sale for my home business without any hesitation.
Final Recommendation
In my personal opinion, HP means quality when it comes to printers. Because of my previous experience with HP?s Laserjet 5 printer series, I can tell you that these are very reliable printers that are very economical to use and maintain. I have seen these printers last far beyond anyone?s expectations and some of them are still in use here in other sections of our extended corporation even after several years.
Therefore, I have no problems giving a high recommendation to the HP Laserjet 5 Refurbished printer, a great printer at a very reasonable cost.
