Fast, Quiet, and Reliable

Date of Review: Dec 3, 2004

The Bottom Line:  If you are in the market for a laser printer, there is nothing better for the price.
I've had this printer for about three months. I bought it to use at the office, where we go through about a carton of paper (10 reams) every three weeks. I'm not kidding about my name, I am definitely not a geek, and yet setting this up was a breeze. The printer port is in the back and easy to reach. I did not even have to look at the directions; just pulled off the packing tape, put in the cartridge, hooked up the cable, plugged it in, ran the software, and it was ready to go. It took less than three minutes from the time I opened the box to printing my first document.

It is very stingy with toner, which is terrific. I've gone through two to three reams of paper and I'm still on the cartridge that came with it, and the print looks as clean and sharp as the first page. Which is another thing. The print is sharp, clean, and even across the page. There is no uneven print as happens with some machines; light down the middle and perfect everywhere else. Not with this machine. It leaves no marks, spots, or anything that doesn't belong there. And laser is great because it prints dry, allowing me to sign it and put it in an envelope immediately without worrying about smudging the ink.

This printer warms up in under 2 seconds, so you can start printing immediately after turning it on. Sometimes I print several documents in a row and everything just keeps coming out smooth and fast. Some machines pause several seconds from the end of one document to the start of the other, but while I'm sure this one must pause too, it is so quick I've never noticed, which means it is very fast because I tend to be impatient.

It has not jammed even once in three months. And while perhaps it's me, most printers I've owned periodically stop printing for no apparent reason, requiring I cancel the documents waiting to be printed, and start over. Not this machine. No problems there at all.

I use various weights and sizes of paper, and it prints everything fast, quiet, and efficiently.

There is one slight problem with the paper guides, which I use frequently because I often change from letterhead to label, envelopes to letterhead, etc. And while they move smoothly and feel solid, unless I make sure they are snug around the paper, the print goes awry. It is not a problem when printing from the paper tray, and it is easy enough to fix by just being careful when I adjust the paper guides.

This is a great machine for anyone looking for an inexpensive, fast, hard-working, and reliable printer.

Recommended to buy: Yes

Pros
Reliable, allows broad ranges of weights and sizes of paper, quick, and quiet
Cons
When using paper guides, they must be snug, or the print will be askew.
