My brother in Law received Guitar Hero 2 for his Birthday a few months ago. I must say it is the best video game out there. This is a game the entire family can enjoy from around age 8 or 9 through 99.
When you buy Guitar Hero you get a Real Sized Guitar and the dvd for the game. If you already owned Guitar Hero 1 you do not need to buy the Guitar again for the 2nd version. The original Guitar will do just fine. Since my brother in law never owned Guitar Hero 1 my sister had to buy the entire package for him which cost her about 100 dollars.
The point of Guitar Hero is to Hit the notes and chords on your Guitar that coincide with what is flashing on the TV screen. If you hit the notes and chords the right way, you will play rock songs correctly, score points, and complete songs so that you can move up to the next level. There are a few levels such as Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert. I suggest everyone start with the easy level when they first start playing as it takes a little while to obtain the finger dexterity to play the guitar really well.
The songs that are programmed into the game are mostly classic rock and hard rock favorites from the 1970's - 2000's. Although I like Rock Music, I do wish the game had a few more " Pop " songs mixed in. If you'd like though, you can attatch this game to your computer and dowload other songs to play on Guitar Hero. I never downloaded any other songs myself, but it's something you can look into if you get sick of playing the same songs over and over.
What is cool about this game is that you can do practice sessions with the songs. This gives you a chance to learn the fingering and to build up your speed. If it wasn't for those practice sessions I don't know how i would have passed some of these songs. This game is truly like playing a real guitar, your fingers have to be very nimble and you have to build up your fingers muscle memory in order to get better and better.
After you finish certain songs or if you are getting ready to complete a Level you generally have to beat a certain famous guitarist in a sort of " playoff " in order to move up to the next level. This can be very fun and also very frustrating as it can take you hours or days to beat these virtual expert guitarists in a playoff.
This game is super for the whole family because your fingers get tired after awhile and you don't mind handing the guitar off to someone else for a few minutes to let your fingers rest. This makes it ideal for homes where 2 or more children are " sharing " video games. If the kids need a rest in between guitar sessions then they are less likely to hog the game all night and argue with each other.
The price of approximately 100 dollars is pretty steep for a vdeo game, but I have to say it is well worth it. After you've played this game for a few months you really feel like you know how to play a guitar and you get the feeling you have accomplished something. This game will keep the kiddies busy for that week off between Christmas and New Year's and will keep them from getting bored during winter months when they have to stay inside more. Mom and Dad can get in on the fun too because this game has no upper age limit and mom and dad may enjoy the music too.
Overall This is the most entertaining video game out there that i have seen that the entire family can enjoy. It would make a great holiday gift idea. Your kids are sure to have hours of fun with it.
