Author's Review
When I first heard Sonique's first single "It Feels So Good" on the radio, I really didn't like it, but Sonique's music and voice hold a magic that will seep into your mind after a while. This was the case for me and a few times later I was hooked on the unique voice, and groovy music of the fabulous Sonique. Her 2000 debut release "Hear My Cry" is one of the few dance cds I own, and the one I listen to the most. I'm not sure which is more captivating, her voice or the songs themselves, all I really do know is that the combination is amazing. I have friends that hate this kind of music, and yet find themselves grooving and singing along with Sonique, which in my opinion shows an ability very few artists have.
"Hear My Cry" is a 12 track groovy album, with the occasionally slower song that pretty much rips my heart out. "It Feels So Good" is the first song on the album, and probably my favorite, not only because I've heard it more than any other, but also because it has such a great beat that I can't help but love it all over again every time I hear it. "I Put A Spell On You" is the second song on the album and automatically makes me think of Bette Midler singing on Hocus Pocus, because it is the exact same song, just with Sonique's unique style taking it over. The song itself is great, and the addition of Sonique makes it irresistible to the ears and a great song to dance to.
"Are You Ready?" is the third song on the album, and just like the others has a great, funky beat to it. If I went out to a club this would be one of the few songs I would actually dance to because it's beat is that captivating and mesmerizing. "Sky" is the eleventh song on the album, and also the second single from the album. In this song, Sonique really shows her range in tune because her voice gets very low in some parts, making it sultry and intoxicating. "Learn To Forget" is the final song on the album, and the slow song that rips my heart out. The line "Wish I could change the things I said about you," hits a little close to home in my life, and gets me upset and depressed every single time I listen to it, yet I can't seem to stop playing it. Sonique's range is also shown in this song, because she gets super deep and low in a few parts, but it's all good.
I would definitely recommend this album to a person that has only heard "It Feels So Good" because if you like that song, you will flip over the entire album. Also this would be a great album for a fan of groovy dance music because it is simple amazing in the get your body moving category. This album is a great one, and hopefully Sonique will prove to be more than just a 'one-hit wonder' with the release of a third single, which I am highly anticipating. This album rules!
