Author's Review
I bought this remote a week ago for my entertainment system and it has to be one of the best purchases I have ever made. In a word, this remote can be described as 'Simple'.
Logitech has centered the remote around a user's actions, rather than the devices, so the main functions are "Watch TV", "Watch DVD", "Watch Video", etc. What this eliminates is the fact that the user has to fumble through the TV to set it to the correct Input(s). Before the remote, we used to have to fumble to set the TV to Video 5 to get to watch Cable (first available component input for our HD set top), and then if we wanted to watch a DVD, we would have to change to Video 6 on the TV, then turn on the DVD player, etc. Same with a VCR or our amp - had to change inputs, turn to correct settings, change aspects, and all this would have to be set using several remotes. With this remote however, all I ever do is press the 'Watch TV' button and VOILA! -- the tv turns on and set to Video 5, cable box turns on, and everything else remains off. If we press 'Play CD', our amp turns on, cd player turns on, TV turns off, Cable box turns off, and only the components that are required for that action are on. It is just simply ingenious.
Every button is configurable to whatever you'd like, even the delays between clicking on the buttons/response times. We set it to 0 ms between buttons and every button and respose is immediate, which is great for us because that was one of the downsides of using our cable box remote. When configuring the buttons, you can configure all the most used buttons to whatever available button you want. If you want the Channel Up button to be configured for the Menu button for whatever reason, you can. And all the most frequently used buttons can be mapped to whatever button that is available on the direct buttons (as opposed to the custom buttons on the LCD portion). We change our aspect of the TV a lot for specific shows, so I mapped that to our INFO button on the front and it works like a charm.
The downsides:
- buttons are a bit small, but you can get used to it
- when buttons are pressed, a small click sound is made. Im used to the Sony silent buttons, so I am still getting used to this click. I still dont like it, but for the functionality of the remote, I'm willing to compromise.
- the glow setting can be set, but it is only time configurable, not action configurable (meaning, the glow will only stay on for a specific length of time - it wont stay on when buttons are pressed. I would love it if it would stay on for that specific amount of time from the last action called from the remote)
- the internet set up pages are a bit cumbersome and confusing to the first time user. You can get used to it after using it a few times, but it takes a bit of time to know where to go to set everything up.
Overall, it's a great remote. And I suggest getting the 688 over the 680 - I just like the buttons and the layout better :)
