Author's Review
Well, all right, not quite; but you get the idea. I checked juicers and prices for months. In view of the fact that there are as many dusty juicers in homes as there are exercise machines, this is obviously not something for an unmotivated person. I felt I needed to just get something to see if I would stick with the work it takes to do a juicing routine. Face it, ALL juicers take work, make a mess, are noisy, and need cleaning. Its usually not the juicer that dooms this lifestyle, its the owner that won't put forth the effort required. I decided to get this inexpensive unit as a starter machine, and if I really got going with juicing, purchase a really good one later. If I found the whole process more trouble than I had time or patience for, then small loss.
Much to my surprise, this is a very good little machine, I agree with others about the small feed chute; but other than that, it has maximum bang for the buck. If you get right on the cleaning while the pulp is still soft and wet, a quick rinse and scrub does it. I boil the stainless basket once in a while to kill any latent bacteria. Speaking of basket; excellent safety feature is that if either of the latches is loose or opened, the basket will not spin. So far, it has beaten the meanest carrots many times, and I do not see the need for an expensive machine at this point.
There are many books on juicing; here are two that contain really good information:
Juicing For Life by Cherie Calbom. Author is not a carpenter turned fitness guru of the week, she is an M.S. in nutrition and is the clinical nutritionist for St. Luke Medical Center in Washington. Gives an excellent profile of which foods supply certain vitamins/minerals. $14.00
Toxic Relief by Don Colbert, M.D. Has a bit of a religious slant as all his books, but full of good ideas not only for juicing, but healthy eating in general. $10.00
