A Handy Dandy Mini Food Processor You'll Love!

Date of Review: Jan 3, 2003

The Bottom Line:  Anyone can use this, but children should be supervised.
This inexpensive kitchen helper was a welcome gift from a married, female friend who knows well its many benefits. Finally I have found something to help me make perfect guacamole! If you read my recent review of my juice extractor, then you know what a disaster avocadoes caused in that appliance. In this Proctor Silex 1.5 Food Chopper, there are simply no problems. I can even make a cup of creamy guacamole in it as the clear, hard plastic bowl may contain a cup and a half of vegetables or three fourths of a cup of liquid (why would I put liquid in this??).

With the sharp twisted blade it has chopped up such vegetables as small chunks of carrots, onions and garlic besides avocados and walnuts in only a few seconds. The Food Chopper works when you plug it into the electrical outlet, slip on the cover of the bowl and press down the On/Pulse button on the top and to the side of the bowl. You decide how long it chops or how finely, so pureeing baby food or soup stock (or guacamole!) is made easy with this.

Need some bread crumbs? Making a graham cracker crust? No problem for the Food Chopper. It doesn't mention ice, but that should be okay. Just don't throw in chunks of ice or veggies larger than an inch around or raw meat, cheese, coffee beans, whole squares of baking chocolate or whole, hard spices.

It's a snap to take apart the five parts and clean the bowl and blade. I've only washed them in hot, soapy water, but they could also be set on the top rack of your dishwasher, it says in the manual. It's so fast washing by hand and used so often that a dishwasher is really unnecessary. There are more instructions for how to use (which I didn't need), chopping and cleaning tips, and how to contact customer service with their toll-free numbers in the U.S. or Canada. The website is proctorsilex.com.

I don't need a big, noisy food processor taking up counter space, so this not-too-obnoxious little guy works out great for me, a single person. If you have a baby or someone with soft food needs, you will be able to puree one serving at a time, but if instead you want to make up lots of servings for many mouths or for storage, then this Food Chopper may frustrate you with its one-serving capacity. My married friend with babies isn't, though.

So far there hasn't been any complaints and I don't predict any. I'm very happy with it and think most of you of either sex could also go crazy over such a handy dandy thing as this. Forget standing at the cutting board for five or ten minutes and look for this at your nearby shopping center. It'll make cooking so much more fun and easy!
