Author's Review
It's a shame that many folk don't really care to give certain movies a try. This one seems like the perfect neglection target. It is the second best part of the series of movies next to the first movie, and it has all the trimmings of delivering a great, scary horror experience. Only problem is that the movie still isn't as scary as say, Halloween part 1. There is hardly as much frolicking around corners and beating around the bush until the knife swipe, there is barely any of that. Instead the movie specializes in action WITH horror. Not a bad combo, but when either side of the equation has anything truly remarkable about it, the status of said movie gets de-elevated somewhat.
I will try to make this a brief Epinion, partly because you must be fully aware of the cliche and simple story presented here when I just say cliche. ALthough there are a few nice twists and a few good plot nacks, there is nothing here that hasn't been seen before.
Instead I will say that this is the PERFECT Halloween experience, just that it falls short of recreating that certain mood of the first. A few nice angles develop well into the plot, but again, this is cliche so it really only matters that I get to the bad stuff, which I already have at the end of the first paragraph.
The bad parts are that the movie reluctantly uses the trademark Halloween music to spook. This could be a wise choice as the firm repetition in the first Halloween was one of the only weak points of that movie. But there is a vague usage of it here, something that is more and more unnacceptable as I read this aloud. To create mood, you need John Carpenter's Halloween music, you cannot have a Halloween movie without it. But even if this one gets away with some of that aural injection, it still lacks in a few key areas where that music could have helped intensify the scene more.
Overall, this is a great movie that screws up in too many categories to warrant anything more than a three score. H2O however, is a fantastic addition to the series, and you should read Epinions on that to hear more good of the Halloween franchise, it deserves it.
