Author's Review
I do not have washer-dryer hookup in my apartment, nor do I have a 220 volt outlet available. This really narrows down the options when shopping for a washer/dryer, even one labeled as "portable." I read some reviews for the Haier, did some price shopping, and ultimately decided to order the XQG65-11SU from Lowe's so I could purchase their extended service guarantee (they matched Wal-Mart and Target's price for the unit). I highly recommend buying locally from someone who offers their own extended service guarantee as opposed to having it shipped from a vendor out of state.
Lowe's delivered 3 weeks later. I could not find anyone who had experience in installing the unit (or had even heard of it), so I did it myself--actually the manual is very detailed and all the accessories I needed to hook it up to my kitchen sink were easily found at Lowe's. I don't recommend moving this machine around, even with the "retractable" wheels it's very heavy and awkward. If possible, find it a permanent home near a sink and hook/unhook the hoses when you want to use it.
I was paranoid about the unit leaking, but I have been doing approximately one load of laundry per day for the past six months and have not had a single problem! You have to completely change your mindset when adjusting to the way this type of machine operates. The manual helps to explain the differences with this unit and conventional machines.
This little machine is a workhorse! The Express cycle washes a large laundry basket full of clothes better than any top-loader I have used. (I've never used the prewash or normal wash setting once--no need.) The cotton cycle spins the towels so fast they are damp-dry when it finishes! The machine is quiet and low maintenance. It sits inconspicuously in an corner of my kitchen and draws all kinds of compliments when we have company. After reading all the other reviews, I consider myself fortunate that I didn't get a lemon--either that or Haier has worked out a few bugs?? So far, I am very happy with my purchase.
Don't count on the customer service people at Heier headquarters to give you very much information about their product! They couldn't even tell me how many built-in rinse cycles the unit had for each fabric setting (cotton cycle has 4 rinses, synthetic cycle has 3 rinses, delicate cycle has 2 rinses).
The washer has twice the capacity of the dryer, so you will have to take some clothes out in order for it to dry efficiently. This worked fine for us as I strung an indoor clothesline and am now hang-drying most of our dress clothes (saves energy and wear and tear on the fabric anyway, and no shrinking!). Some people may feel this extra work defeats the purpose of a one-unit-does-all, but I'm just thrilled not be be spending all my Sunday afternoons at the laundromat anymore.
The other consideration is water pressure. Apparently mine isn't as strong as it should be. The unit works fine, but the water level isn't always as high as I would like. Fortunately, you can add water if you choose.
Bottom line, READ ALL the other reviews and FOLLOW the advice--open unit and take out black rubber tubes before running the machine, do not open lint trap!, be sure unit has been leveled before running, don't use too much soap, etc. etc. I was very realistic with my expectations and I have not been disappointed. You have to consider your household situation and your lifestyle, e.g. this would not be a good unit for a household with more than 3 people.
