Author's Review
I have had my Grundig G5 AM/FM/SW radio for about two months now, and I am completely satisfied with it. The FM sensitivity is excellent, and the radio offers an option of mono-only FM reception for weak FM signals that you want to hear.
Tuning is, of course, all digital, with an almost ridiculous number of storage registers. There are seven buttons for user-programmed frequencies, and then one hundred registers, each capable of remembering seven frequencies. I have yet to fill up more than the first three storage registers. But if youÕre into SW listening, the large number of storage registers would allow allocating a SW band to a particular storage register, thus giving seven SW frequencies in a particular band.
The radio takes four AA cells. An AC wall wort adapter is provided, but the battery life has been so good I havenÕt found a need to use the adapter. The radio is about the size of a VHS tape, and the weight is acceptable. I would rate the construction as "sturdy." Audio quality from the built-in speaker is fine. There is, of course, an earphone option, and there is additionally a Òline outputÓ option for feeding to other audio equipment, if you want.
The display is LCD with a back light for night time viewing. There is a bit of a learning curve figuring out what all the buttons are for, but no more so than any piece of modern-day electronics in a compact package. The owners manual is printed in a small 6-inch tall by 3.5-inch booklet format, so the detailed instructions are, of necessity, in small type.
